JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: We are searching for a motivated and talented electrical or electronics engineer to join our Electronics Systems Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). You will be part of a team that develops custom hardware and autonomous software and firmware, running on platforms ranging from small embedded processor systems to very complex systems with network interconnected distributed processing and power. You will: Design custom circuit boards and power electronics to support system functions Develop software/firmware that is tightly interfaced to hardware in an embedded system Debug and test hardware, software, and firmware using unit integration and hardware-in-the-loop system tests Document designs and write specifications Demonstrate and present to peers, management, sponsors, and stakeholders Collaborate with and support other members of the team Additional responsibilities for the higher level include: Manage electrical/electronic engineering projects of small or moderate size Mentor and train employees in the development of technical, project, and business development skills Contribute to proposals, reports, and presentations This position can be filled at the intermediate or advanced professional level, depending on your education and experience. Minimal requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, Master's Degree preferred; 2 years related experience for the intermediate professional level. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions. Required skills/experience areas include: A comfort level while working on engineering aspects, ranging from system design and documentation through prototype construction and testing Specific domain knowledge in C/C++ Experience in MATLAB, LabVIEW, VHDL or Verilog Success in an environment where various forms of communication were crucial to be effective Preferred skills/experience areas include: Skills specific to the Xilinx Vivado Development tools and Xilinx System on Module Object Oriented Design Active government security clearance Your working location will initially be fully on-site, located in State College, PA, with the possibility for future project-dependent hybrid work. This position will require occasional travel to support testing and meetings.
