The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

Genentech, a leader in bio-pharmaceutical sciences, is seeking a highly-motivated and talented specialist/engineer with a proven track record of laboratory achievements to join our growing Department of Small Molecule Process Chemistry. The successful candidate will work with our South San Francisco process development team, and will participate in the development of early phase GMP chemical manufacturing processes. The candidate is expected to maintain a high-level scientific profile both internally and externally in terms of scholarly achievements and pipeline contributions. The position's mission will be accomplished through innovation and teamwork, collaboration with strategic partners, creative problem solving and use of state-of-the-art technology.

The Opportunity:

  • Conduct calorimetric studies which includes Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Reaction Calorimetry (RC1) and adiabatic testing (Phi-Tec) to evaluate and assess thermal risks of chemical compounds and reactions for early phase clinical projects.

  • Develop and optimize synthetic process unit operations (specifically crystallization, filtration and drying) by running experiments for use with process modeling tools in support of API and intermediate isolations in early phase clinical development.

  • Make detail-oriented observations; interpret and document results via electronic laboratory notebooks and milestone development reports.

  • Interact with cross functional team members and contract manufacturing partners.

  • Keep current with developments in the field through peer-reviewed journals and other media, and maintain a scientific profile both internally and externally.

Who You Are:

  • BS or MS in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.

  • 2+ years of experience in process chemistry or process safety is ideal.

  • Working knowledge of the latest developments in thermal calorimetry and process modeling is highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience at the kilogram delivery scale and early- to mid-phase process optimization is preferred, but candidates of exceptional promise without this experience will also be considered.

  • Demonstrated manufacturing experience at the kilogram delivery scale is preferred.

  • Ability to interact, learn and eventually lead in a CMC/cross-functional environment. Ability to take initiative, provide strategic input, problem solve, work in teams, develop people and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
