As a Mechanical Engineer within the Engineering Support team, you will lead and manage key engineering projects to support product design and manufacturing. Your role includes driving innovation in product development, ensuring designs meet manufacturability standards, and providing technical support for production. Working collaboratively with manufacturing engineering and production teams, you will ensure product conformity with engineering standards, customer specifications, and design for manufacturability (DFM) principles.
- Design Leadership: Lead design initiatives in accordance with Shred-Tech Engineering Procedures and ST Quality System standards.
- Process Development: Formulate and develop comprehensive mechanical machine design processes, focusing on manufacturability and production alignment.
- Product Development: Research, design, and coordinate the development of new product models and improvements to Shred-Tech's existing product line.
- Documentation: Create and maintain accurate engineering documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawings, and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), adhering to engineering protocols.
- 3D Modeling: Utilize CAD software, such as SolidWorks, to create 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Coordinate projects, liaise with suppliers, perform testing and validation, and work directly with manufacturing teams to ensure alignment with engineering specifications and DFM principles.
Strategic
- Execute product development and engineering support projects in alignment with the objectives set by the Product Development and Engineering Support Manager.
- Provide insights for product strategy and implement Engineering Standards that align with Shred-Tech's strategic goals.
- Develop and manage project plans, budgets, and schedules that meet business requirements.
- Track and report project progress to ensure timely achievement of deliverables, budget, and schedule targets.
- Conduct in-depth analysis of components, assemblies, and systems to validate design and manufacturing compatibility.
- Prepare detailed engineering documentation, including drawings, BOMs, ECNs, and product manuals.
- Supervise assigned projects and mentor team members as required.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide technical support to various departments.
- Foster a collaborative learning environment and promote knowledge sharing within the team.
- Ensure all work aligns with established engineering processes and quality procedures to maintain product consistency and quality.
- Manage development activities within assigned budget parameters.
- Document SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) activities accurately.
- Identify and propose opportunities for cost improvement and process efficiency.
Education
- Professional Engineer (P'Eng)
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 3-8 years of experience in design, analysis, and project management for custom equipment, heavy machinery, metal fabrication, system assembly, and testing environments.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and ERP/MRP systems (preferably Epicor).
- Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) is an asset.
- Strong understanding of DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly) and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a robust background in materials science.
- Excellent project management skills, with strong capabilities in planning, organizing, and decision-making.
- Effective communication and professional interaction skills with customers, suppliers, and partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team and foster an environment of knowledge sharing.
