The Chlor-Alkali Principal Engineer is responsible for all technical aspects of the facility, including safety, design change management, commissioning & startup support of new facilities, and future process improvement projects. This position will be responsible for interfacing with stakeholders including other engineering teams, operations, maintenance, utilities, IT, environmental, safety, contractors, and senior management.

Working Conditions
Our facility sits at an elevation of 4,700 feet. Employees may be subject to extreme weather conditions when working in an outdoor setting (desert heat, freezing cold, wind). Work is at an open pit mine or manufacturing/chemical plant setting, which may include exposure to moving mechanical parts, toxic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, explosives, fumes, or airborne particles.

Manual dexterity; sense of touch; sense of smell; speaking clearly; hearing-speech range; hearing - all ranges; seeing, reading and comprehensions; seeing - distant/near; depth perception; color vision. While performing the job responsibilities, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The Chlor-Alkali Principal Engineer is responsible for all technical aspects of the facility, including safety, design change management, commissioning & startup support of new facilities, and future process improvement projects. This position will be responsible for interfacing with stakeholders including other engineering teams, operations, maintenance, utilities, IT, environmental, safety, contractors, and senior management.
Essential Duties
- Integrate into the existing team comprised of operations leadership and commissioning to support the recommissioning and integration of a recently idled chlor-alkali processing facility into a semi-closed loop plant to process recycled brine from rare earth processing
- Serve as the SME for all chlor-alkali processing, including brine treatment, evaporation, TOC removal, ion exchange, filtration, electrolysis, cell and membrane monitoring, HCl, NaOH, and NaOCl production
- Manage an efficient team of process engineers, delegate responsibilities for day-to-day operations support and capital project efforts, budget for both department and capital needs, and self-perform work as needed to support production and business objectives; this is a working leadership role
- Train and mentor other engineering, operations, and training staff on process technology, KPIs, and troubleshooting
- Guide the specifications and design of any existing or new systems
- Follow design, project management, and document control standards; update and develop new standards as needed for continuous improvement
- Development of project scopes, and maintaining proper communications, schedule, and budget tracking with other supervision and management
- Guide the creation, review, and approval of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and process log sheets for new and existing process operations; work with area trainers to effectively communicate materials to the operations group
- Work within the PLC/SCADA environment to support plant operations
- Ensure team objectives are met on-time, as 24/7 plant and capital project needs dictate
- Assist in maintaining the PI Historian tags, data, and graphics
- Review and approve designs of proper control schemes and strategies
- Participate in large capital project teams as a technical lead, sponsor, advisor, or group leader
- Manage the execution of small capital projects
- Work efficiently and professionally with fellow engineers, electrical and mechanical maintenance, procurement, engineering and construction contractors, plant operators, vendors, plant management, and other team members to complete overall department goals
- Complete any other tasks as needed or as directed by management
- BS degree in Chemical Engineering, or a related field
- 10 years process engineering experience, 5 years minimum experience in a chlor-alkali engineering role
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Valid Driver's License and good driving record are required to drive company vehicles on property
- 10+ years of experience in a chlor-alkali engineering role
- 3+ years of experience managing company or project personnel
- Experience with a wide range of instrumentation: temperature, pressure, level, electrical monitoring, control valves, flowmeters, pH, conductivity, ORP, etc.
- Experience with the following unit ops is preferred: water, air, and gas utility systems; brine treatment; multi effect evaporation; electrolysis; chlorine and hydrogen systems; liquid absorption scrubbers; bleach production and storage; filtration; cooling towers; various pumps; solid media ion exchange columns; etc.
- Experience working with SAP enterprise software
- Cogeneration power plant experience is a plus
- Affinity for maintenance troubleshooting
- Experience in process improvements from conceptual design, identification, scoping, detailed design, procurement, through installation, commissioning, and startup
- Allen Bradley PLC, HART communication protocol & instruments, General Electric iFIX, OSI Software - PI (Data Link, ProcessBook, Server, Notifications, etc.), Microsoft SQL Server
- Process optimization/tuning experience of closed loop control systems
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Computer skills should include Microsoft Office suite
