AFS-USA is part of a worldwide network of AFS partner organizations that work together to advance global education and foster meaningful connections across cultures. As the network's largest partner, AFS-USA works to increase the global competency of U.S. citizens by providing a variety of international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities. We are proud of our Staff of approximately 200 dedicated individuals, working from our national office in New York City as well as home offices across the county, who collaborate with our more than 2,000 AFS-USA Volunteers to deliver high quality programs and global education resources. These include immersion-based study abroad experiences in over 40 countries worldwide; opportunities to host foreign AFS exchange students; and global learning workshops and curricula for educator, schools, and businesses.

Position Summary

AFS-USA is seeking a versatile and innovative Vice President of Development to lead its fundraising strategy, alumni and donor engagement and cultivation efforts. This position will play a critical role in driving revenue to support our mission and programs. The VP will oversee a dynamic team, manage relationships with donors, and create new approaches to diversify funding and maximize existing potential.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership •Serve as thought partner to the President and CEO and key member of the Executive Leadership Team. •Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to increase individual, planned giving, corporate, and foundation giving with a special focus on raising funds for scholarships. •Collaborate with the Senior Director of Development, Database Coordinator and consultants to enhance donor care and moves management. •Lead efforts to attract and cultivate new generations of donors. •Work closely with the Board and President's Council to engage high-level donors and alumni, fostering relationships that lead to major gifts and planned giving.

Donor Engagement & Stewardship •Personally manage a portfolio of 50 major donors. •Oversee the Senior Director of Development's portfolio, which includes 300 individual donors, and provide guidance on energized outreach and stewardship. •Lead efforts to deepen relationships with alumni, leveraging their personal and professional networks to support scholarship programs and strategic initiatives. •Plan and execute 3-5 in-person major donor and alumni engagement events annually in target areas of the country.

Team Leadership & Management •Provide visionary leadership to the Development team, fostering a culture of innovation, drive and collaboration. •Supervise and mentor direct reports, instilling best practices, encouraging professional development and communicating the context of broader organizational goals. •Implement data-driven approaches to donor segmentation, stewardship, and moves management using Salesforce (Transition from Raiser's Edge NXT currently underway).

Growth & Modernization •Explore creative fundraising techniques such as A/B testing, digital outreach, activities that encourage alumni to connect with each other, reunion giving, and monthly sustainer programs to engage a broader donor base. •Identify and cultivate relationships with corporate donors, family foundations, community-based organizations and planned giving prospects to expand the funding pipeline. •Partner with the marketing and communications team and the Manager of Diversity and Inclusion to enhance and expand donor messaging and increase visibility, share impact stories, and raise awareness of especially how AFS is reaching underserved communities, increasing inclusion and opportunity, and building bridges in a multicultural and often divided society.

Key Priorities in the First Year

1. Attain revenue goals in all areas.

2. Expand the base of monthly donors and cultivate lapsed donors to drive sustainable revenue growth.

3. Expand corporate and foundation giving by identifying new opportunities and securing strategic partnerships.

4. Lead the transition to Salesforce for improved donor management and reporting.

5. Support the Board and President's Council in engaging alumni and leveraging their networks for increased giving, especially toward the $1M scholarship goal.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an experienced fundraising leader with a proven track record in donor cultivation and innovative fundraising strategies. You should have a passion for AFS-USA's mission and the ability to articulate it compellingly to donors and partners. We are looking for someone who can bring fresh ideas to the table while maintaining a focus on donor relationships at all levels, and results-driven fundraising.

Key Qualifications •10+ years of development experience, with a focus on major gifts, donor care and team leadership. •Track record of skillful donor cultivation and stewardship, especially with high-net-worth individuals; ability to build relationships that are lasting and not transactional. •Familiarity with corporate and foundation giving. •Drive and ambition for the organization. •Willing to travel domestically, up to 25% •Experience in enhancing a development department by introducing best practices and systems improvements. •The vision and emotional intelligence to acknowledge the organization's history of achievement while assessing potential for innovation; patience with imperfection. •Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with a talent for storytelling and engaging diverse audiences. •Familiarity with Raiser's Edge NXT or Salesforce is highly desirable, as is experience in donor segmentation and moves management. •A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree or advanced certifications in fundraising are a plus.

Further Information •SALARY: $190,000-$210,000 •LOCATION: Hybrid; New York, NY
