POSITION SUMMARY
Barton Malow is seeking a Sr. Preconstruction Lead/Estimator to join our Work Acquisition team in a hybrid role at the Southfield, MI office. This position focuses on the energy, automotive, and industrial markets, with responsibilities including accurate cost estimation for various project delivery models and sizes, either individually or by leading a team. This individual will manage estimates throughout projects, ensuring adherence to company standards, and will collaborate with leadership on construction methods and strategies. Additionally, this role involves engagement with departments like scheduling and operations, prioritizing and communicating project needs and constraints. The position offers opportunities for career development and mentorship for entry-level estimators, emphasizing continuous improvement and effective communication in both in-person and virtual settings.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepare estimates for a variety of contract types including lump sum, CM, design build, EPC. Interact and effectively communicate with clients and team members. Perform and/or lead others to complete typical estimating facets such as:
Detailed quantity take-offs and organizing the quantities with unit pricing in production of an estimate. Solicit bids and quotes from subcontractors and suppliers. Communicate effectively with subcontractors and suppliers to clarify pricing information. Prepare estimate formats in such areas as general conditions, general bidding, quantity takeoffs, and bid analysis.
Write detailed scopes of work for construction contracts to be implemented by Project Delivery. Work with Project Delivery in the Procurement of trade work. Prepare schedules for proposed projects. Assist staff members with various special projects related to overall preconstruction and estimating efforts. Mentor and assist in the development of less experienced personnel. Develop estimates utilizing Excel and WinEst. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management or equivalent professional experience. 10+ years' experience in construction estimating with a construction management or general contracting firm. Proven ability to provide pursuit leadership. Market experience is preferred, but not all required in automotive, power & energy, light and heavy industrial. Experience in developing competitive design build and hard bid. Experience in effectively leading preconstruction teams to win work. Experience in developing and implementing value engineering solutions to drive down costs while maintaining quality. Working knowledge of trades: scope, time frames, field execution and potential risks/exposures. Demonstrate understanding and knowledge about estimating processes and delivery methods.
