Optical Engineer

Willow Laboratories, Irvine, California, United States, 92713

Job Summary: Willow Laboratories, Inc. is a medical technology innovator, guided by a mission to improve lives by making the impossible possible through innovation. We are looking for an Optical Engineer to contribute to the design, development, and manufacturing of electro-optical systems including imaging sensors and spectroscopy for biomedical applications that focus on measuring human vital signs non-invasively. The position will require planning of the project with senior management which will include defining key milestones and deadlines for the team working on the project. This position will work closely with other engineers, including electrical, embedded SW, mechanical, biomedical and algorithm. Must be self-driven and self-motivated to achieve results within time frames available. Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Apply Optical Engineering principles to support formulation of new concepts and solutions for NIR, Laser and Raman Spectroscopy on applications for non-invasive monitoring devices. Support setting up a design methodology integrating optical and mechanical design activities and using advanced simulation tools and processes selection. Perform engineering tasks involving electro-optical metrology, optical alignment, system testing, data collection, analysis and simulation. Perform hands-on work with optical components, emitters and detectors used in the infrared/visible spectra such as lenses, gratings, filters, lasers, LEDs, CCDs and photodetectors. Collaborate with the R&D team to develop optics for compact, small, miniature, or micro optical systems. Provide accurate and detailed requirements documentation for procurement and fabrication of optical components. Demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to work well with other engineers to learn and exchange fundamental concepts, design directions and testing protocols for optical, mechanical and electronic subjects. Willingness to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic work environment, pursue hands-on and down-to-the-earth mentality. Be organized and knowledgeable on project details and industry trends. Deliver results with strong emphasis on quality and timelines. Minimum Qualifications and Experience: Bachelors degree in related field. Masters, PhD degree desired. Knowledge of lens design. Knowledge of geometrical and physical optics to support modeling optical systems, performing system optimization, tolerances and performance analysis. Experience in applying the basic principles of photonics and spectroscopic instruments such as: lenses, mirrors, filters, beam splitters, gratings, spectrographs, lasers, detectors or spectroscopic instrumentation. Demonstrate ability to understand an optical problem and clearly convey an understanding to others. Demonstrate ability to understand an electronics circuits for optical system such as laser driver, TEC, detector signal conditioning and processing. Experience with spectroscopic techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence, absorption, UV, VIS, NIR spectroscopic application. Have experience in some of the following areas: design, prototyping, product development or testing of optical systems for spectroscopy, semiconductors or lasers, LEDs, lenses, refractive, reflective, diffractive, and electro-optical elements, illumination or imaging optics. Show proficiency with one or more optical design SW packages such as Zemax, Comsol. Experience with Solidworks, Matlab, LabVIEW, or other similar modelling software would be highly beneficial but not essential for the role. Excellent conceptual, analytical and problem- solving ability. Good communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interface effectively with engineering and manufacturing personnel. Knowledge and practice of research and development processes. Organized with good documentation discipline. Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment with exciting work and a fun team.
