General Atomics, Poway, California, us, 92074
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.
We have an exciting opportunity in San Diego, CA (Poway, CA) for Aircraft Icing CFD Analyst Engineer to contribute to the icing analyses of subsonic and transonic air vehicles, especially as it relates to the prediction of ice accretion and the impacts to aerodynamics and aircraft performance. This engineer will be involved in the analysis of ice accretion on airframe structures using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, the design, sizing and optimization of ice protection systems, ice shedding trajectory analyses, engine operability assessments, and validation testing via wind tunnel and flight test. Responsibilities include the execution and documentation of analyses and tests related to icing aerodynamics, aircraft performance, and airworthiness certification. Candidates will also interface with internal and external customers as necessary to present results and ensure work is completed appropriately. This position is within the Flight Technologies department in San Diego, CA.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities will include performing icing accretion analysis, de/anti-icing system sizing and optimization, ice shedding trajectory analysis, mathematical modeling, aerodynamic predictions, test planning and support, flight and wind tunnel data analysis, and documentation.
Plan, manage, and execute aerodynamic analyses using tools that range from handbook methods via inviscid tools all the way to Navier-Stokes CFD and associated meshing tools.
Develop and maintain in-house analysis tools, perform mathematical modeling, and provide aerodynamic design support for new and existing aircraft.
Support various tests including wind tunnel tests and flight tests, including reducing and analyzing the data after the test and documenting the results.
Generate reports, specifications, and memos of the obtained aerodynamic and performance results and present them in meetings and phone conferences to all level employees and customers.
Occasional travel to wind tunnels, flight test sites, customer sites, and conferences.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.

May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
Requires strong technical knowledge of external aerodynamics of aircraft at subsonic and transonic speeds.
Requires strong knowledge of icing certification requirements (FAA or equivalent).
Requires familiarity with aerodynamic analysis tools that include inviscid tools and 2D airfoil codes (such as XFoil, MSES, and LEWICE).
Requires solid experience with the repair of complex CAD geometry.
Requires solid experience with the creation of meshes with boundary layers on complex 3D geometries.
Requires solid experience with running full Navier-Stokes CFD solvers on HPC clusters.
Requires proficiency with icing analysis tools LEWICE and/or FENSAP-ICE. Other typical CFD tools might include ANSYS/FLUENT, ANSA, and/or Siemens StarCCM+.
