About the Role
Substation electrician performs equipment operations and electrical maintenance within the PATH Substations and Switching Stations. Typical tasks include the operation, maintenance and repair of 27kv and 15kv high-tension switches, 650vdc distribution circuit breakers, signal high-tension breakers 480vac draw-out style circuit breakers and other associated power apparatus.

About the Role
Substation electrician performs equipment operations and electrical maintenance within the PATH Substations and Switching Stations. Typical tasks include the operation, maintenance and repair of 27kv and 15kv high-tension switches, 650vdc distribution circuit breakers, signal high-tension breakers 480vac draw-out style circuit breakers and other associated power apparatus.
Responsibilities
Typical duties may include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Assist in the assembly, installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, alteration, dismantling, and/or repair of a variety of electrical and power apparatus throughout PATH, including low and medium voltage circuit breakers, 125vdc control power systems, switches, cables, circuits, gauges, motors, conduit, and wiring. Prepare written reports and document test results, as directed.
- Cut, bend, thread, and install conduit, raceways, and related hardware. Drill holes, install hangars, and perform other field construction work using hand and power tools. Clean, service, and/or paint junction boxes, power apparatus, and electrical housings.
- Assist in the installation, splicing and testing of power and control cables; moving and handling heavy cable reels.
- Assist in response to emergencies, unusual occurrences, or weather affecting power and electrical facilities, including power outages, electrical malfunctions, and snow/ice removal.
- Pick-up and transport personnel, materials, equipment, and tools between various locations and work sites in the Port District using a PATH vehicle.
- Work at elevated heights from ladders and bucket trucks; work in severe weather conditions; work in tunnels adjacent to active electrified tracks; work in cramped, slippery, dusty locations; work on all shifts and with a non-traditional workweek.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:
- High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Three years (3) full-time continuous paid work experience at the journey level performing duties in the installation, care, testing, maintenance, and/or repair of electrical equipment, or comparable electrical maintenance or electrical construction.
- Valid Driver's License.
Ideal candidates will present the following profile:
- Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose repair and install motors, lighting systems, controllers, cables, conduit, etc.
- Experience as a Journeyman Level Electrician or Licensed Electrical Contractor with Medium Voltage electrical experience with substation electrical experience.
- Skilled in maintaining and repairing Medium Voltage electrical systems and switchgear.
- Skilled in maintaining and repairing 480vac electrical systems and switchgear.
- Skilled in maintaining and repairing 650vdc electrical systems and switchgear would be a plus.
- Knowledge of state and local electrical codes.
