Director of Accounting

APM Music has been a crucial part of the experience for over 40 years with placements in the smallest of indie films to the largest blockbuster studio releases, national and worldwide commercial campaigns, TV dramas and sitcoms, sports broadcasting, video games, podcasts, interactive promotions, and user-generated content. Our music can be found daily on platforms as diverse as Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Wondery, and Spotify.
Founded in 1983 as a joint venture between Sony/ATV and Universal, APM Music is the recognized leader in the production music industry with a catalog of over 900,000 tracks in every imaginable genre. Our music elevates any content and brings a story to life.
The Role:
This role demands exceptional critical thinking skills, along with a keen eye for detail and precision. As a full-time position within the Finance department, the Director of Accounting will spearhead the accounting team, overseeing all aspects of financial reporting, accounting operations, and regulatory compliance.
We’re seeking a strategic leader with deep technical accounting expertise who excels at managing a team and collaborating closely with senior leadership to enhance business performance and drive growth. The Director of Accounting will ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial records, actively contribute to the company’s financial strategy, and uphold compliance with all regulatory and internal controls.
This is a Hybrid role and will work out of the Los Angeles office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with lunch provided in the kitchen on Tuesdays.
The Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team to foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Establish clear performance expectations and conduct regular performance evaluations.
- Support CFO in developing financial strategies to optimize profitability and cash flow.
Accounting:
- Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal controls.
- Ensure accurate and timely close processes, including managing the month-end and year-end close cycles.
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and supporting financial analyses to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Lead annual audit, including preparation and organization of audit workpapers and being point of contact with the audit manager.
- Collaborate with Legal and Sales departments on revenue recognition policies.
- Analyze and recommend improvements in accounting processes and systems to enhance efficiency and scalability.
- Lead in identifying, developing and implementing process improvements and system upgrades/changes in software.
Finance:
- Work with the CFO to maintain annual budget, monthly forecasts and monthly department variance analyses.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) or IFRS, as applicable.
- Review and analyze financial data to provide insights into the company's financial performance and potential areas for improvement.
- Calculate and reconcile compensation data, including sales incentive payouts and bonuses.
The Qualifications:
- Flexible, strategic team player with high integrity and ethical standards, who is also able and willing to be extremely “hands-on.”
- Self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively.
- Ability to fluctuate between micro and macro issues, working with staff at a detailed level and delivering results to management at an executive level.
- Meticulously detailed-oriented and organized.
- Expert Excel skills and the ability to manage large sets of data using vlookups, pivot tables and sumifs.
- Bachelors in Accounting/Finance required.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and full Accounting Cycle.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with a portion of it being in a supervisory role.
- Experience in managing and developing Accounting teams.
- CPA is preferred, but not required.
