Senior Manufacturing Specialist

Job Summary

The candidate will join a highly skilled cellular engineering team that is pushing the boundaries of medicine by developing, engineering, and manufacturing promising new cell therapies for a variety of indications including cancer, autoimmunity, infectious disease, and inherited hematologic and immune disorders.

The candidate will primarily manufacture cellular therapies for several clinical trials in our academic cGMP cellular therapy manufacturing facilities at UCSF. Additional skills and activities include:

  1. Developing and implementing new cellular engineering tools and technologies.
  2. Drafting and supervising execution of detailed standard operating procedures for processing of whole blood and apheresis products.
  3. Cell culture using sterile technique.
  4. Operating complex cell manufacturing equipment.
  5. Running assays to test the cellular product.
  6. Detailed documentation of the manufacturing process.
  7. Qualification and maintenance of equipment, reagents, and the GMP manufacturing facility.
  8. Writing qualification plans for new processes and completing study reports for submissions to regulatory authorities.

This position will routinely involve long hours and some weekends and holidays. Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions precisely are critical to success in this position. The candidate will have the opportunity to take on defined research projects within the larger group and be an author on scientific publications.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $99,100 - $157,600 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco is a leader in cellular therapy research, training, and patient care. Faculty in the department are involved with a wide variety of standard of care and experimental cellular therapy applications including hematopoietic stem cell transplant, regulatory T cell therapy for autoimmune disease and solid organ transplant, anti-cancer T cell therapies, and mesenchymal stromal cell therapy. You will be situated within the larger cellular therapy community at UCSF, which is undergoing a period of rapid expansion.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 3+ years of related experience.
  • At least 2 years' experience cell therapy manufacturing in a cGMP facility.
  • Experience with clinical cell and gene therapy process scale up and scale out.
  • At least 2 years cell culture experience.
  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.
  • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to lead and influence others.
  • Flow cytometry experience.
