General Summary

To provide basic and advanced respiratory care to all patient populations to include pediatric, neonate ,and adults in the form of diagnostic modalities, pulmonary disease prevention, application of invasive and noninvasive therapeutic modalities and patient assessment and facilitation of appropriate care, and specializing in critical care.

Essential Functions Meets patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by conducting pulmonary function tests; assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results; determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription. Helps patient accomplish treatment plan and supports life by administering inhalants; operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators Administers respiratory therapy treatments by performing bronchopulmonary drainage; assisting with breathing exercises; monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes. Evaluates effects of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending adjustments and modifications. Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home care; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment Provide Respiratory support for Internal and External patient transport as needed under the direction of a physician. Maintains patient confidence and protects hospital operations by keeping information confidential. Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. Minimum Requirements Associates Degree or equivalent from a two-year AMA approved school for Respiratory Care required; Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Care preferred Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and licensure by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) required. Must obtain second level NBRC credential such as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), Certified Respiratory Therapist - Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty (CRT-NPS) or Registered Respiratory Therapist - Neonatal/Pediatric Specialty (RRT-NPS) within one year of employment.
