Express Newark/Rutgers is a university-community collaboration and a center for socially engaged art and design. Located in the historic Hahne & Company building in Newark, it is an interdisciplinary learning space that brings together Faculty, students, and the community. Posting Summary Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Deputy Director. Reporting to the Director, this position will serve as second-in-command at Express Newark, a socially engaged art and design center at Rutgers University – Newark. This position will take on a significant scope of responsibility in this newly created leadership role. Broadly, this position will function as the senior advisor and strategic partner to the Director, and share responsibility for the general operations of Express Newark. This position is responsible for and not limited to the following: Oversees organization, direction, and administration of various business services of Express Newark Assist with the financial administration and operations of Express Newark, administrative oversight of Human Resources, Facilities, Visitor Services, Security, Special Events, Communications, Publications, and Registrars Represent Express Newark to key stakeholders, including the Advisory Board, the Senior Management, and individual, foundation, and corporate donors, alongside the Creative Director Position Status Position Status Full Time Daily Work Shift Daily Work Shift Day Work Arrangement Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business administration, art history, fine arts, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general accounting principles and practices At least 5 years of senior management experience and the proven ability to lead teams and indirectly manage multiple stakeholder groups, both internal and external Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities A master’s degree in arts administration, business management, or a related field is preferred Proficiency in developing and implementing operational plans and strategies to advance the mission and goals of the organization Experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general accounting principles and practices Significant and tested financial management acumen and the ability to understand complex budgets and contractual agreements High-level use of databases, spreadsheets, and other analytical tools to organize large quantities of data Strong detail orientation with a data-driven approach to strategic decisions Strong communication skills and the capacity to represent Express Newark compellingly to donors, University constituents, and the wider public The ability to effectively convey the Museum’s key messages both face-to-face and online, both in public meetings and one-to-one A record of dedication to and success in advancing diversity, equity, access, and inclusion Ability to model and establish a culture of mutual respect, transparency, and empowerment A natural affinity for relationship building and broad network engagement; experience working with a variety of constituencies to create and support symbiotic external partnerships Demonstration of visionary organizational leadership in a museum, nonprofit, or comparable arts or community-based organization Understanding of and/or appreciation for the role of an art center and its integration with the academic mission of a large public research university A deep, lived passion for and understanding of art and visual culture Openness and flexibility in considering solutions and strategy development Ability to maintain composure during times of stress The ability to professionally discuss complex issues with others with varying perspectives and objectives Diversity and inclusion are core values at the heart of what Express Newark does, and as a cultural institution, Express Newark benefits from the rich diversity of the communities it represents and serves.
