Description
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for completing either protection & control design or physical design on various substation projects. The Senior Electrical Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical plans according to budget constraints, design factors and client needs. Experience in either P&C or Physical design is acceptable, with a preference for those with experience in both.
Protection & Control:
Create/modify one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel arrangements, and cable lists for 12-500kV substations.
Coordinate and provide technical assistance to SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and control design staff to develop complete protection, control, and monitoring systems.
Perform calculations such as voltage drop, CT burden & saturation, lighting, and short circuit.
Create relay setting database files and technical reports for relays associated with transmission lines, transformers, breakers, buses, and other associated devices.
Utilize system studies in order to evaluate or design protective relay and control systems for appropriate substation protection.
Develop protection relaying testing & commissioning plans to be executed by others. Review and approve testing & commissioning reports done by others.
Physical:
Prepare/create construction documents for installation of new or modification of existing substations including bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections, and electrical details.
Select, recommend, and prepare preliminary designs.
Perform calculations such as lightning, grounding, and conduit fill.
Both:
Create/modify technical specifications for major equipment, such as power transformers, power circuit breakers, control houses, and other related materials.
Provide engineering, construction, and testing & commissioning support for projects.
Review design drawings and specifications to ensure projects meet acceptable standards of operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability, and safety.
Create project scope descriptions and man-hour estimates with sufficient details to clearly define work and cost required.
Apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings.
Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design.
Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced team members.
Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of one's work.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.Protection & Control:
Strong knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, including understanding of three-phase power systems.
Knowledge of basic protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment.
Familiarity with microprocessor based protection and control systems with the ability to understand one-lines and control schematics.Physical:
Substation physical layout, electrical clearances, rigid and strain bus design, ground grid design, surge and direct stroke protection, and raceway design.Both:
Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA, and ANSI.
Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for 1 year experience.
7 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Successful completion (i.e.passing) FE or EIT preferred.
Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
