Job Title: Sr Substation Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced Sr Substation Engineer to lead detailed 4kV - 500kV substation physical design and/or protection control and SCADA design projects. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, specifying, calculating settings, and coordinating protective relays and relay control schemes. This role also involves developing and maintaining logic schemes in protective relays and power system-specific logic controllers, as well as providing technical guidance to other engineers.
Responsibilities
Design and specify protective relays and relay control schemes.
Develop and maintain logic schemes in protective relays and power system-specific logic controllers.
Create protection schemes for transmission, distribution, generation, and renewable energy sources.
Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers.
Perform short-circuit analysis, time-current coordination, and step-distance coordination.
Develop relay settings and prepare test plans.
Provide commissioning assistance and perform protection system event analysis and troubleshooting.
Ensure all relay settings activities conform to industry standards and client policies.
Present technical solutions to clients and respond to technical concerns in real time.
Collaborate with various groups to develop and implement technical solutions.
Act as the subject matter expert for substation physical design and/or protection control and SCADA design projects.
Review protection and control relay settings and work with relay settings engineers.
Perform substation design calculations and analysis, such as ground grid analysis, lightning protection studies, and voltage drop calculations.
Perform quality control checks on substation physical and/or protection and control design projects.
Coordinate projects with different teams, including Protection & Controls, Structural, Civil, Transmission, and Design/Drafting teams.
Develop technical equipment and construction specifications and work scopes.
Perform physical design using Microstation, AutoCAD, or similar CAD tools as needed.
Provide on-site technical support during construction and commissioning as required.
Produce project cost estimates, schedules, and budgets.
Other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
Professional Engineering registration or plan to become registered within one year.
A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in substation engineering design.
Experience in power system protection and controls engineering, and relay settings.
Proven experience in system modeling and fault analysis software (ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, or EasyPower).
Strong knowledge of relay coordination studies and development of protective relay settings for systems from 12.47 kV to 345 kV.
Experience applying protection system engineering practices in transmission line, bus, transformer, capacitor bank, reactor bank, feeder, generator, motor, and communication-assisted protection schemes.
Familiarity with industry standards and NESC, IEEE codes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with SCADA, communication systems, and network engineering.
Proficiency in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
Experience with Mathcad is a plus.
Experience with Microstation, AutoCAD, and/or Bluebeam.
Experience working with WinIGS is preferred.
PE license is strongly preferred but not required.
Strong analytical and computer skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Highly motivated with strong client relationship management skills.
Proven multitasking and organizational skills.
Experience leading project teams is a plus.
Work Environment
This position offers remote work with occasional travel (5-6 times per year). The role requires willingness to enter energized electric substations with proper training and PPE. The work environment is flexible, allowing for work from any Southeast state.
