Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provide appropriate services as required including emergency rescue and fire suppression; perform search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; perform emergency medical and first aid services as needed; prepare reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned. * Drive emergency apparatus and/or operate fire apparatus on emergency calls or at an incident scene. * Operate, test, and maintain numerous types of rescue, emergency, and fire suppression equipment and apparatus as necessary. * Participate in cleaning and maintaining facilities, grounds, equipment, and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned facility; ensure that all equipment and apparatus is in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls. * Participate in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs including training, code enforcement and equipment operation and maintenance. * Participate in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations; identify, analyze, and mitigate hazardous and dangerous situations. * Respond to a variety of hazardous materials incidents; to perform defensive or offensive activities which will be dependent upon levels of certification in accordance with state and federal regulations; maintain a level of knowledge and training based on certification level. * Pre-planning activities: study street and occupancy locations in assigned district; study building plans and fire prevention systems in buildings in assigned district. * Participates in conducting routine building inspections for life & fire safety violations following the parameters of the department inspection program. * Assist with transportation of patients to medical care facilities; evaluate the condition of patients and assess pertinent information about medical profile and injuries; conduct patient assessments and treatment in accordance with established protocols and license level; maintain contact with medical facility to prepare for patient arrival. * Operate EMS vehicle and related equipment; clean and maintain supplies, materials, and equipment aboard EMS vehicles; submit requisitions for additional materials and supplies as necessary. * Prepare emergency medical incident reports regarding patient and incident information. May be required to complete and upload patient care reports. * Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and access records, information, and other various data. * Give tours of assigned facility, demonstrate fire equipment and apparatus, and participate in other educational programs for various groups and general public pertaining to a variety of life safety topics. * Any additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

* High School Diploma or GED. * Three (3) years combined post high school work or education experience. * Valid Driver's License with a safe driving record. Obtain South Carolina license within 30 days of relocation. Must obtain Class E license within one-year from date of hire. * Valid Emergency Medical Technician certification required. * Valid Basic Life Support Provider certification required. * Firefighter I required (NFPA 1001 compliant curriculum completion/certification). * Firefighter II preferred (NFPA 1001 compliant curriculum completion/certification).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Departmental testing may be administered during interview. * Subject to psychological and physical health screenings. * Subject to criminal background check. * Subject to drug and alcohol testing. * NIMS certifications (ICS 100, 200, 700, 800) completed within 60 days of hire * Considered emergency essential position and subject to report to work during any declared emergency situations(s).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is very heavy and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and in excess of 50 pounds to move objects and the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. Must meet the medical standards established by NFPA 1592 and the department's medical testing vendor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in the field during emergency situations. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, inclement weather conditions, fire, heat, and toxic gases. The work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, gloves, and or specialized clothing.
