Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for assisting theprofessional medical staff in one or more of the clinics or othermedical operations of the Metropolitan Health Department. Prepares andmaintains patient records; schedules patient appointments; inventoriesand orders supplies; and assists professional medical staff inconducting physical examinations as needed.Exercises no supervision.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

Work Hours

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday

Rotating Schedule 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday

Essential Job Functions

* Schedules patient appointments. * Maintains patient medical files and records. * Inventories and orders office and medical supplies. * Greets patients and visitors to clinics and other assigned medical operations. * Assists professional medical staff in conducting physical examinations and other medical procedures as needed. * Maintains records on specimens and samples sent for laboratory analysis. * Records information in patient medical files at the direction of professional medical staff. * Types correspondence requested by physicians and nurses. * Orders office and medical supplies for clinic. * May perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing laboratory orders, and records laboratory results in medical charts. * Performs simple procedures not requiring professional expertise, medical knowledge, and/or public health experience. * Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

* High School Diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency). * Six (6) months of medical office, program intake, Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant, or other directly related medical experience; OR completion of the SA Ready to Work Healthcare Training Program. * Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

* Training as amedical assistant or other directly related medical experience is highly

desirable. * 6 months of phlebotomy experience.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university. * Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

* Knowledge of medical office procedures and practices. * Knowledge of medical terminology. * Knowledge of the procedures used in the maintenance of medical files. * Knowledge of patient scheduling procedures and routines. * Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment. * Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. * Ability to perform routine patient intake and basic nursing procedures. * Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. * Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
