The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Public Information Specialist (Parks & Rec). Under general supervision, performs professional-level work preparing and presenting public information and marketing materials in support of the City's Parks and Recreation Department; performs related duties as assigned. The Public Information Specialist for Parks and Recreation will serve as the primary liaison between Parks and Recreation and the media, community groups, and other stakeholders, and will be responsible for managing all aspects of public information and media relations for Parks and Recreation functions. He or she is responsible for a wide range of public relations activities including coordinating communication programs to promote programs, facilities and services; developing promotional materials and graphics for projects; and preparing, editing and disseminating written correspondences and online content. This position reports directly to the Communications and Marketing director (Public Affairs director) and indirectly to the Parks and Recreation director. Essential Functions of Position: Serves as liaison between the City and the media, which includes responding to media requests; preparing and disseminating news releases; generating and deferring media attention; preparing and disseminating public service announcements; creating talking points; setting up press conferences and meetings; coordinating interviews and performing other related activities. Writes and edits copy for social media channels. Administers department surveys. Ensures adherence to City branding in all department communications and marketing pieces. Evaluates program data to inform strategic marketing objectives. Monitors newscasts and publications to track media coverage and accuracy of reports, contacting news outlets as necessary. Develops, plans and implements community education, outreach and marketing activities, materials and publicity for applicable public information and/or involvement programs, which may include public speaking on City operations and initiatives. Assists with development of newsletters, brochures, flyers, and other marketing materials. Gathers and prepares written components of annual reports, manuals, guides and pamphlets. Assists with events, ceremonies and programs as needed. Posts news releases to City website. Manages dissemination of public information through email and text services. Ensures consistent City message through all marketing and public relations outlets and materials. Establishes and maintains a productive working relationship with representatives of the various news media, outside agencies and the general public. Photographs City employees, events and facilities as needed. Coordinates internal communications with employees. Prepares and/or edits letters of support, endorsement, welcome, etc., for administration and boards. Other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : General knowledge of public relations and marketing principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of writing, editing and journalistic (AP) style; general knowledge of the organization; skill in the use of computer and desktop publishing equipment and programs; general knowledge and skill in photography; ability to write clear and concise employee and community public information materials, reports and releases; ability to gather and analyze facts on a variety of subjects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, news media and the general public; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, orally and in writing. Manual dexterity to work effectively on a typewriter and/or computer keyboard. Acceptable Experience and Training: Bachelor's Degree in Communications or related field required and minimum of two years of journalism, public relations, marketing or community relations experience.
