If so, the City of Fairfield invites you to join their team as a Lifeguard! The Parks and Recreation Department is looking for highly motivated and energetic individuals who would like to join the City's aquatics program located at the Aquatics Complex at Allan Witt Parks. Lifeguards create a safe and positive atmosphere for all participants as they maintain constant watch over the public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accidents, assist swimmers in distress and provide emergency and routine first aid.
Positions in this series are flexibly staffed, below are distinguishing characteristics:
PLEASE NOTE:
Positions are part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied scheduleto meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
If your application is accepted, you will be invited to participate in an assessment process which will include an interview and swim test. Assessment dates and additional details regarding the assessment process will be provided if selected to proceed

- Lifeguard I - is the entry level class that allows the incumbent to develop journey level skills and abilities. Advancement to the higher level is possible after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.
- Lifeguard II - in addition to the above perform tasks more independently and are also responsible for teaching swim lessons and aquatic classes to a variety of skill and age levels.

Minimum Qualifications
Lifeguard I:
- No experience required
- Must be at least 15 years of age or older; ability to obtain and retain a Work Permit throughout employment if under the age of 18.
- Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training Certification is required at time of appointment.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation is required.
- Experience teaching or training group classes is preferred.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment teaching skills evaluation is required.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct continuous surveillance of pool area for signs of swimmers in trouble and for violations of pool and safety regulations.
- Monitor activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents; enforce rules, regulations and policies.
- Respond quickly to emergency situations in the water or surrounding areas; perform water rescues and first aid.
- Maintain a safe environment and take steps to prevent accidents by eliminating potentially hazardous conditions.
- Provide courteous and professional service to program participants, facility users, City staff and the public.
- Present professional appearance (including wearing appropriate uniform or attire) at all times.
- Attend and participate at staff meetings and trainings.
- Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility; maintain accurate records.
- Provide aquatic safety and instruction for guests.
- Prepare incident & accident reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Teach swim lessons and aquatic classes to a variety of skill and age levels; evaluate participants according to program outlines and goals.
- Provide positive and continual feedback to program participants regarding progress.
Knowledge & Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Current preventive lifeguard techniques.
- Recreation and lifesaving tools and equipment.
- Basic principles of customer service.
- Swim with proficiency and endurance.
- Perform water rescues, CPR and first aid.
- React calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Communicate courteously and effectively with participants and those encountered in the workplace.
- Teach proper swimming techniques and water safety to youth and adults.
- Prepare required reports and forms.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Enforce rules diplomatically.
