This role is primarily remote but based out of the Pittsburgh area, with some regional travel expected (~15-20%).
Typical Day:
10%-30% working with clients remotely
60%-80% Engineering and development of design packages for customers
10% admin/planning/customer follow-up
As a Distribution Engineer, you can expect to:
- Independently develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems for Leidos electric utility customers.
- Review client-provided work and assess scope requirements.
- Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, specifying conductor sags and tensions for recommended spans, as well as voltage drop and flicker calculations.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including post-construction reviews to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
- Conduct root cause analysis of outages and develop mitigation strategies using engineering principles.
- Gain experience in coordinating conflicting utilities, assessing, and developing large design packages for complex projects, and managing easements and right-of-way applications.
What Sets You Apart (Background Requirements):
- Mid-Level: 2+ years of electric distribution design engineering experience, either in a consulting environment or directly at an electric utility; Senior-Level: 4+ years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline from an accredited institution; additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an engineering-specific degree.
- Experience executing distribution projects from kickoff through design approval, including customer interaction and process documentation.
- Familiarity with utility reliability projects.
- Proficiency with the NESC.
- Capability to utilize a personal vehicle for customer-related travel; travel will be reimbursed at IRS-approved rates.
- Willingness to perform both field and office work; ability to work outdoors occasionally.
- Valid U.S. driver's license is required.
Nice to Haves:
- Previous QAQC experience.
- Experience providing cost estimates and BOM development.
- Familiarity with design tools such as Pole Foreman, O-Calc, and Spida-Calc.
- Experience with the Work Management System CREWS.
- 1 year or more of relevant management or leadership experience.
- Experience with FirstEnergy or its subsidiaries.
