Tesla
Mechanical Test Engineer, Cell Electrode
Tesla, Palo Alto, CA, United States
As a member of the cell modeling team, this engineer will explore and study electrode mechanical swelling during battery cycling through test development, test execution, and data analysis. This work will build fundamental material understanding and feed into larger mechanical simulations to support both Tesla's vehicle and energy product development. The engineer in this role will be expected to work alongside other engineering and prototyping teams to design experiments, root cause testing issues, and synthesize data efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments to test the behavior of cells, including managing test queues and directing cell testing
- Analyze and interpret data through automated programming scripts to quickly synthesize results
- Identify sources of test-to-test and sample-to-sample variation and recommend changes to fix root cause
- Consolidate results into consistent workflows to be consumed by other team members
- Document and communicate best practices and important test results and fundamental understanding across a wide range of teams
- Be a member of a cross functional product development team to help determine the ideal cell design for different electric vehicle and energy product applications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Math, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience in test execution and analysis
- Data analysis skills in a scripting language (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
- Experience with electrochemistry and cell testing
- Experience in equipment design, CAD, and/or FEA simulation
- Strong analytical skills to synthesize data into concrete results to guide future experiments
- Strong communication skills and preference for working in teams
