Job Summary

Produces computerized tomographic images of designated anatomic areas as directed, to neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients according to established practices and procedures. The technologist demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the appropriate care to the age of the patient served by the Department of Imaging Services.

Responsibilities and Standards

  • Performs scans/procedures in accordance with the department's guidelines as outlined in the department's policy and procedure manual and / or as modified by the department's medical director to ensure timely delivery of appropriate and high quality service.
  • Verifies every patient's identification and correlates exam requests with physician's orders prior to beginning any procedure.
  • Follows the radiology department's policy as procedure regarding pregnancy status for any female between the ages of 11-55.
  • Explains the procedure to the patient with professionalism and compassion, positions for the procedure, adjusts and operates the equipment and performs all patient procedures in a professional and timely manner. Technologist will also follow Part 16 of the NYS Sanitary Code to protect all patients, other staff members and self during procedures.
  • Notifies waiting patients of unanticipated delays and periodically gives a status update.
  • Demonstrates consistently a thorough knowledge of anatomy, pathology and physiology and uses the knowledge to maximize the diagnostic information for the radiologist.
  • Practices proper entries and records on the Radiology Information System.
  • Operates CT scanner safely and correctly for data acquisition, reconstruction of images, documentation of images, and performs quality control measures for the purpose of ensuring optimal quality images and performs CT exams with strict adherence to the CT exam protocol manual
  • Compares patient's prior images/reports prior to imaging current study.
  • Performs critique of every exam for completeness and correct labeling prior to completion in PACS and prior to releasing the patient.
  • Reviews all "non-routine" studies (as defined by the radiologists) prior to releasing patients to avoid unnecessary call backs to the department.
  • Performs IV cannulation using aseptic technique while minimizing pain/discomfort to the patient as per NYS DOH Scope of Practice.
  • Performs i-Stat testing in accordance with the lab and radiology policies.
  • Solves job-related problems (causes for artifact, minor equipment malfunctions, technique modifications etc.) and makes the necessary adjustments and/or notify the department manager immediately of any equipment issues so as to ensure the best diagnostic quality study.
  • Ensures that all paperwork pertaining to the procedure to include, but not limited to the time-out, consent, brief Op note, H and P is correct and has been properly scanned into the computer.
  • Practices accurate and timely completion of scheduled and unscheduled work to maximize productivity.
  • Interacts and communicates with physicians, support staff, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate departmental operations in a professional and courteous manner
  • Performs daily cleaning and inspection of equipment to the assigned exam room.
  • Properly stocks assigned room prior to the start of the shift.
  • Protocols exams for the next day to include that the examinations were scheduled properly and flag any contraindications.
  • Practices safety measures in CT and the Environment of Care by recognizing potential safety hazards and responds appropriately and professionally to situations requiring immediate action and judgment, demonstrates knowledge of all the hospital emergency codes, adheres to the Infection Control Policies, QA polices and all hospital administrative policies .
  • Applies the professions code of ethics in all aspects of practice.
  • Maintains all certifications including contrast injection if applicable.
  • Maintains current competencies for all job related duties
  • Enhances educational growth and displays professional interest. Demonstrates willingness to learn and practice new procedures and techniques and accumulates continuing educational credits during the appropriate time frame to ensure active licensing / certification at all times.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology.

Experience: Recommended minimum of 1-2 years previous CT scan experience. BLS required

License: Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology; New York State License in Radiologic Technology.
