General

The Sr. Engineer (Traction Power, Overhead Contact Systems) reports to the Manager, Traction Power/Electrical Engineering and is responsible for engineering, construction, maintenance, design support of capital improvement projects for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
Essential Functions & Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide engineering support to Rail Operations, Capital Projects, Construction Management, and other Caltrain departments to maintain Traction Power, OCS, railroad structures, including tracks, tunnels, bridges (civil/structural).
  • Oversee projects performed by contractors on Caltrain property. Ensure their designs are following and comply with Caltrain Engineering Design Criteria and Standards.
  • Assist with the development of the annual, short-term, and long-term Caltrain Traction Power Engineering and maintenance plans. Ensure traction power OCS is in state of good repair.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  • Identify root causes of engineering issues and present appropriate solutions.
  • Review and perform engineering calculations on Traction Power, OCS, to protect the integrity of the railroad electrification structures and to ensure technical requirements are met.
  • Prepare calculations, plans, and specifications to support OCS design and analysis using relevant design criteria codes and standards for new and rehabilitation type projects.
  • Assist with review drawings, construction cost estimates, specifications, technical reports, and other contract documents.
  • Provide technical guidance to Project Manager(s) and other projects as required by responding to RFI, construction submittal and site-specific work plan.
  • Perform site inspections during construction and maintenance projects to determine if they are with in tolerance levels established by the transit industry and other applicable regulations/specifications.
  • Develop solutions and provide technical input for design optimization for cost effectiveness, risk management challenges and constructability improvements for capital and maintenance projects.
  • Update railroad OCS-related engineering standards and as-built drawings.
  • Conduct project meetings and field meetings with internal and third-party personnel.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect self, fellow employees and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of full-time progressively responsible professional experience in a rail transit traction electrification system, engineering firm.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Professional Engineer's license is preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge and experience of Federal and State transportation regulations and programs, including FRA, CPUC and AREMA is desired.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct OCS inspections.
  • Must possess effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver license with safe driving record.
