Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Development and External Relations Officer is a key member of the leadership team and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the organization. In partnership with the President and CEO, the CDERO is responsible for all aspects of fundraising and development, communications, volunteers, and other job-related activities. The successful individual will also design and implement a comprehensive and cohesive plan for developing important external alliances through focused outreach and cultivation. Duties And Responsibilities
Development
Define and develop realistic, growth-driven strategic and fundraising plans while working with the CEO, Board members, volunteer leaders, outside consultants, and staff to assure that both short and long-term fundraising goals are realized. Oversee the identification of opportunities to expand institutional relationships and sponsorships. Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with existing and potential donors that will expand the revenue base. Oversee the corporate and foundation relations program including the research, preparation, and follow-up of all grant-related proposals, reports, and activities. Monitor and report regularly to the President and CEO, and the appropriate board members, on the progress of the development program. Oversee the execution of the donor recognition program to include personal communication, publicity opportunities, receptions, and awards, as appropriate. Oversee the planning and execution of special events, including the budgets supporting their implementation. Review contracts with institutional sponsors for support of organizational programs/products and campaigns. Oversee prospect research of individuals, funding streams, and trends, with foresight, to help position the organization with major gift funders. Work with the President and Board to identify, cultivate and manage a portfolio of major gifts prospects and donors. Direct and oversee the donor record-keeping systems for tracking of monetary and in-kind donations. Monitor and report all donor information; provide and present statistical analyses to board and senior leaders. Communications
Lead and manage the creation of a cohesive and innovative external affairs strategy to increase the visibility and awareness of the organization’s work, the achievement of its students and alumni, and position the organization as a premier voice on college success for inner-city students. Develop and supervise the execution of a multifaceted communications strategy conveying key themes of high quality, growth, sustainability, and accountability to influential constituents, donors, foundations, politicians, higher education, the media, and friends. Establish the organization as a thought leader with key funding, fundraising, communications, and volunteer professionals. Oversee the expansion of relationships with industry-related associations, business, and corporate worlds, while staying alert to current trends and opportunities. Oversee the development of press releases, op-ed pieces, newsletters, and featured articles, including prompt, factual responses to media inquiries; manage the development and distribution of all publications. Volunteers
Oversee the recruitment and acknowledgment of fundraising volunteers- Associate Board, Leadership Council, alumni, and others- and their engagement in activities aligned with their interests and abilities as well as the organization’s strategic direction. Establish and monitor an ongoing directory of volunteers, detailing their interests and activities, for all volunteer functions, committee positions, and special projects. Administration
Work with the President and CEO and board leadership to plan board and committee meetings and agendas, and oversee the distribution of minutes, as appropriate. Participate in all full Board and committee meetings, as appropriate. Work with the President and CEO and the entire management team to develop and implement annual budgets and financial objectives. Work with the executive team to ensure the organization complies with all grant and governmental funding requirements. Oversee the system of donor acknowledgment and the publishing of donor lists and reports. Identify, develop and mentor the Development and External Affairs team. Qualifications:
10+ years of overall professional experience in a role that includes one or more of the following: Leading development and fundraising strategy in a nonprofit setting. Directing a philanthropic portfolio within a grant-making institution or corporation. Managing and nurturing high-profile relationships with external constituents. Proactively identifying and addressing fundraising opportunities for growth and expansion. Strategic thinking and successful navigation of working with teams. Distilling and drawing connections across complex ideas into strategies and approaches. Communicating persuasively using multiple verbal and written formats (e.g., PowerPoint, memos, emails). Experience in education, a related social sector, or policy advocacy. Extensive understanding of budgets and budget management. Experience in Salesforce preferred. Company Description
