Definition of Classification: This position interprets educational, extracurricular, and general information exchanged in classrooms and a variety of other settings using American Sign Language (ASL) and transliteration services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) students, faculty, staff, and the university community. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Attends classes, advising sessions, tutoring sessions, meetings, events, and student extracurricular activities with D/HH students to interpret educational information, classroom discussions, and activities. On a regular basis, responds to revisions in schedules that require interpreting for different courses, etc., in different settings and for individuals with differing communication needs and preferences; transliterates course materials and other documents when required. Assesses consumer needs and the interpreting situation before and during each assignment and adjusts as needed. Consults with faculty to identify potential problems that could inhibit the effective provision of interpreting services; advises faculty on uses of technology and how to negotiate communications with D/HH students to convey course content. Observes problems encountered and progress being made by D/HH students and reports observations to supervisor. Performs in team interpreting as required. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned. Qualification Guidelines Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following: Experience/Training/Education: Required Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND 1800 hours of paid, volunteer, or family-related experience as an interpreter for D/HH. Completion of an American Sign Language Interpreting program of at least 30 units or its equivalent is ideal. Preferred Preferred qualification: Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university with a major in Deaf Studies with a concentration in ASL/English Interpreting or a closely related field. National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a passing score of 4.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA). Special Note: Certification of Interpretation (CI) or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) will be accepted as qualifying. Knowledge and Skills: American Sign Language interpretation and application techniques, including special sign vocabularies required for varied college disciplines. Current developments, trends and techniques in the field of interpreting utilized for D/HH. Proper ethical conduct as outlined in the National Association of the Deaf - Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (NAD-RID) Code of Professional Conduct with emphasis on the appropriate role of an interpreter in an educational setting. Values, behaviors and language of the American Deaf Culture. Use and operation of various assistive devices for D/HH. Interpret proficiently in both voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice modes while accurately conveying the thought, intent and spirit of speakers. Rapidly process visual and audible information to convey complex concepts, unusual vocabulary and unexpected information to ensure student understanding. Analyze situations accurately, evaluating alternatives and adopting an effective course of action. Maintain confidentiality of university and student files and records. Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential student issues and situations. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices. Communicate effectively, orally, via ASL and in writing. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Operate a computer and standard business software. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work. Meet schedules and timelines. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Working Conditions: Standard office setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. Physical Demands: Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; climb stairs; peak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds. HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University expects to pay for this position is defined as the Hiring Range . Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
