University Student Assistant - Student Media Business Manager (Spring 2025)

Department: Communication Salary: $8.25 per hour, 15 hours per week (Must be able to work some nights and weekends) Position Summary: The Student Media Business Manager supports the operation of Jax State's student media outlets - The Chanticleer and WLJS 91.9 FM - by developing financial support appropriate for each outlet. Specifically, the business manager helps the WLJS program director develop and manage relationships with businesses, nonprofit groups, individuals, and other entities to develop support for WLJS 91.9 FM, JSU's student-run radio station, across all its platforms, which may include terrestrial broadcasting, digital streaming audio, podcasts, the web, social media and other forms of media. The business manager maintains contact with existing patrons and advertisers and initiates contact with potential new patrons and advertisers to develop financial and other forms of support for WLJS and The Chanticleer in their mission to serve JSU students and the broader university community. The business manager also manages the sale and publication of advertising for The Chanticleer across all its platforms, which may include the web, social media, print and other forms of media. As a member of the student media staff, the business manager works closely with the other student staff members and with the director of student media. The business manager also must be or become familiar with FCC requirements pertaining to WLJS's broadcast license and help ensure compliance with those requirements from the student staff and in the station's agreements with patrons. The business manager also must be or become familiar with ethical and legal issues around the publication of advertising in student media. Positions may be filled based on individual applicants' skills, qualifications, and departmental needs. Adheres to all department and University policies and procedures. Duties & Responsibilities: Maintains confidentiality of information. Maintains contact with existing patrons and advertisers and initiates contact with potential new patrons and advertisers. Participates in regular staff meetings to help plan WLJS's and The Chanticleer's operations. Helps arrange and participates in training for student staff, volunteers and others involved in programming, publication, and digital content. Meets regularly with the program director, editor-in-chief and the director of student media. Represents WLJS & The Chanticleer at public events and professional meetings on campus and off campus. Meets regularly with university administrators, students, faculty, athletic and community groups to discuss support for WLJS and The Chanticleer. Monitors digital media analytics to gauge WLJS's and The Chanticleer's effectiveness in reaching its audience. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. ) If not a first-time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU. Must maintain a professional attitude and appearance. Preferred Qualifications: A major in communication with a concentration in broadcasting or digital media production, or public relations and advertising; or a major in marketing. Successful completion of COM 304 and/or COM 412 with a "C" or higher grade. Prior experience with WLJS and/or The Chanticleer as a volunteer or in a media workshop course.
