Toole Design Group in Boston, MA is looking to hire an experienced and talented full-time Principal Civil Engineer. Do you have a strong background in civil engineering with final roadway/corridor design experience? Do you desire to be a part of a collaborative design process for sustainable multimodal transportation projects, but believe an auto-centric approach is outdated? Are you passionate about creating quality construction documents and safe streets for all, which make communities more livable? Would you like to work for a firm that is committed to the well-being of its employees? If so, please consider joining our Boston team.

This engineering position with a focus on final design construction plan development and corridor modeling earns a competitive salary and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement, a health savings account (HSA), and a flexible spending account (FSA). We practice what we preach and ensure that our employees also have access to transportation by providing them with financial incentives to bike, walk, or use transit for a better quality of life.

About Toole Design

Toole Design is the leading engineering, planning, and landscape architecture firm specializing in multimodal transportation in North America. Since our start in 2003 as a single office in Maryland, we have expanded throughout the United States. Our talented team of planners, landscape architects, urban designers, and engineers are committed to delivering quality work that meets the needs of all people, regardless of age, ability, race or gender. As an Engineering News-Record top 500 design firm, we have also been named a "best firm to work for" and have one of the lowest staff turnover rates in the industry.

Every project our employees deliver directly and positively affects our communities. We are industry-leading experts, and we work hard to encourage a collaborative and team-oriented environment.

A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer

As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs like AutoCAD in order to fulfill production work on your projects as needed and/or supervise others doing that production work. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and answer questions during construction. You will work with your team to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.

You will assist Engineering Group Managers and/or the Engineering Director in the Northeast by independently managing and leading company projects in the region. You’ll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering projects to construction. You will also be participating in business development, project pursuits, and play a key role in the firm’s quality initiatives. In an industry that is constantly changing, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering creative solutions to challenging projects.

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer

This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours a week, with at least two to three days a week in the office. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. The Boston office of Toole Design is conveniently located in downtown Boston, blocks from multiple MBTA subway lines. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
