Dean of the Law School

University of Chicago (UC), Chicago, IL, United States

The Dean is the chief executive officer of the Law School. The Dean is responsible for ensuring that the Law School enhances its position as one of the world’s premier institutions in legal education and research and continues to be widely regarded as such in both the legal and academic communities. The Dean is responsible for developing, managing, and growing all of the Law School’s assets—intellectual, physical, and financial—thereby ensuring its continuing excellence. The Dean is the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Law School both internally at the University and externally in the broader world.

We seek candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to the academic values that are at the core of the Law School, namely excellence in academic research; rigorous, faculty-driven teaching; institutional neutrality; and freedom of expression for all members of the Law School community. Candidates must have the capacity to lead a large, complex, knowledge-based organization where ideas are challenged and debated freely. Candidates must have strong communication skills and the ability to represent the Law School’s mission and values, and the accomplishments and capabilities of its faculty, to a wide range of audiences. Candidates must also have the ability to build and manage high performance teams and work effectively across multiple constituencies. Exposure to resource development and philanthropy is preferred but not required. Finally, candidates must have a record of academic achievement that merits appointment as a member of the Law School’s faculty.

Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest submitted through the University of Chicago’s secure website at http://apply.interfolio.com/158470.

We seek a diverse pool of applicants who wish to join an academic community that places the highest value on rigorous inquiry and encourages diverse perspectives, experiences, groups of individuals, and ideas to inform and stimulate intellectual challenge, engagement, and exchange.
