The Launch and Missile Defense Systems (LMDS) division within Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Principal / Sr. Principal Software Engineer (Scientific Analyst - Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) System Performance Analyst) with experience in conducting cloud-based system tests and comparing measured performance parameters against system requirements.

The position is located in Boulder, CO. Boulder is nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and only 25 miles from downtown Denver.

Position Overview:

The Principal / Sr. Principal Software Engineer (Scientific Analyst - Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) System Performance Analyst) job responsibilities will include developing test and analysis tools, organizing and presenting findings to team leadership and government customers, and supporting root cause analysis. Our team fully adopts Agile methods and strictly executes an Agile framework across all team functions.

Essential Functions:

  • Performance analysis of satellite attitude generation and image processing algorithms.
  • Onboarding and initiating applications on a cloud-based framework.
  • Scientific software verification and validation.
  • Create Shell scripts in Linux.
  • Tool and prototype development using C/C++ and Python.
  • Analysis tool development, including visualization (e.g., in Python).
  • Technical documentation as required.

Basic Qualifications for Principal and Sr. Principal Software Engineer (Scientific Analyst - Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) System Performance Analyst):

Basic Qualifications:

  • Principal Software Engineer - (Scientific Analyst - Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) System Performance Analyst): Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience or a Master's degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of experience, or a PhD and 0 years of experience, or 9 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Sr. Principal Software Engineer - (Scientific Analyst - Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) System Performance Analyst): Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 9 years of related experience, or a Master's degree in a STEM discipline and 7 years experience, or a PhD and 4 years of experience, or 13 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Linux experience.
  • C/C++ experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience working with Atlassian products such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Working knowledge of applied linear algebra.
  • Experience with algorithm design with knowledge of state estimation.
  • Data analysis experience - Population statistics and Trend identification.
  • Bridge between theoretical concepts and practical implementation experience.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ development tools and integrated development environments (IDEs).
  • Software algorithm development experience for complex, mathematically intensive systems.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up-to 10% to support business needs.
  • Applicants must have an active in-scope U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance which is required to start; with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.

Additional Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Software Engineer - (Scientific Analyst - Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) System Performance Analyst):

  • Strong evidence of technical leadership experience.
  • Strong record of technical documentation, which may include publications or open-source software contributions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong statistical background and skills.
  • Experience in satellite and remote sensing algorithms for sensor processing.
  • Ground systems experience in mission processing, ground communications, and space operations.
  • Experience in the numerical implementation of filters or digital signal processing expertise.
  • Experience scripting, including analysis and parsing of logs.
  • Familiarity with Electro-Optical Infrared (EOIR) sensors and simulations.

Salary Range: $107,300 - $160,900

Salary Range 2: $133,000 - $199,600

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
