The Chair of the English Department is the academic and chief administrative officer of the department. She/he is charged with leading the faculty and staff in advancing the department's research/scholarship, teaching, and service mission. The Chair is responsible for leading recruitment, retention, and assessment of programs within the department. She/he works with constituents to develop the departmental vision, develop a strategic plan, and achieve departmental goals. The Chair is also charged with promoting the Department through alumni and donor engagement, and ensuring the quality and competitiveness of its graduates. The Chair reports to and works collaboratively with the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Primary Function of Organizational Unit A&T's Department of English offers an undergraduate major and minor and two graduate degrees (M.A. and M.A.T.). The department teaches students how to think critically as well as how to understand and communicate in a diverse world. Degree programs in English are: BA in English, MA in English and African American Literature, BS in Secondary Education (English Education), and the MA in Teaching (English). The Department of English is housed within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Minimum Requirements A doctoral degree in English and an established record of teaching, research/scholarship, and service commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor. Leadership experience preferred. Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education The preferred candidate will have a specialty in one of the following areas: Rhetoric and Composition, African American Literature, English Literature, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, Technical Writing or a closely-related specialty. In addition, the preferred candidate will have significant prior administrative and management experience, good communication skills and a commitment to student success and promoting a diverse and inclusive culture. Required License or Certification Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies.
