Bristol Myers Squibb encompasses a broad range of disciplines to enable a robust pipeline of drug candidates aimed at serious diseases. Chemistry is a core capability in Small Molecule & Drug Discovery with innovative scientists working in medicinal chemistry, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, and large-scale synthesis. Within SMDD our Lead Discovery and Optimization (LDO) team is responsible for high throughput screening, compound storage and distribution, primary assays to support discovery programs, and compound profiling to explore drug liabilities in vitro. LDO scientists discover and adopt cutting edge assay technologies that utilize state-of-the-art automation to drive speed and efficiency. Our Molecular Structure and Design team embraces novel approaches to computer-aided drug design, machine learning, and structural biology. The integration of these disciplines provides a seamless and highly interactive environment for discovery scientists to learn, develop, and innovate.
Medicinal Chemistry – Principal Scientist
We are seeking an exceptionally talented and highly motivated medicinal chemist who is passionate about joining our fast-paced medicinal chemistry group in the pursuit of discovering innovative therapies in Oncology. The candidate will have demonstrated an ability to design new synthetic targets independently and in a hypothesis-driven manner based on emerging SAR data. The candidate should have relevant supervisory experience with internal direct reports as well as external CROs. Candidates must have experience in the independent design and execution of multistep syntheses of complex organic molecules using modern organic chemistry. Excellent hypothesis driven problem-solving skills and a thorough understanding of medicinal chemistry principles, synthetic methods, and reaction mechanisms are required. Excellent oral and written communication skills and a desire to work in a collaborative team environment are required. A track record of innovation documented through co-inventorship on issued patents and authorship of publications in peer-reviewed journals is necessary. A strong proficiency in fundamental aspects of drug discovery and demonstrated ability to lead or co-lead multi-disciplinary discovery programs and advancing them to critical milestones is preferred. Knowledge in E3 ligase and UPS biology is a plus as protein homeostasis is one of the fundamental research engines at BMS delivering therapeutics to patients.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of academic or industry experience
OR
Master’s Degree and 6+ years of academic or industry experience
OR
Ph.D. and 4+ years of academic or industry experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. with 4+ years of industry relevant experience
- Demonstrated record of productivity in organic or medicinal chemistry research as evidenced by publications and/or patents.
- Independent, creative target design and high level of synthetic productivity applying modern synthetic methods with strong chemistry problem-solving skills.
- A strong commitment to experimental work is expected, demonstrated by an ability to carry out multi-step syntheses and state-of-the-art purifications, with spectroscopic characterizations of novel organic compounds (NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, etc.).
- Proficient with Chemdraw, and other medicinal chemistry-related software.
- Strong skills in gathering, documenting, and analyzing information from competitive sources such as patents and meetings and using this information to guide program strategy.
- Emerging understanding of the drug discovery and development process.
- A naturally collaborative and self-motivated style is necessary to work effectively in a fast-paced, highly integrated team environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to write peer reviewed quality work or invention disclosures for patent applications, and able to present the rationale, key data, issues and accomplishments department wide.
For California Sites: The starting compensation for this job is a range from $121,000 - $167,270, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
