Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc. (RMD, Watertown, MA), provides a dynamic work environment for performing world-class research and development in the fields of radiation detection and imaging, nuclear instrumentation, and non-destructive test equipment. Since its founding in 1974, RMD’s research and development have resulted in breakthrough technologies and products that are utilized in a wide range of scientific fields, from space exploration to particle physics, and from nuclear security and safeguards to clinical diagnoses and environmental research.

This Chief Scientist role is pivotal to the success of our organization, requiring a proactive and strategic approach to secure funding, foster collaboration, and contribute to the advancement of cutting-edge research. The primary responsibility of a Chief Scientist at RMD is to secure R&D funding through a multifaceted approach, encompassing:
Diversification of Opportunities: Explore non-SBIR bidding opportunities and assemble a team of researchers and engineers to address project requirements. Take a leadership role in preparing and submitting proposals with the support of the team.

Internal collaboration: Foster internal collaboration to address non-SBIR opportunities by forming multifaceted teams of engineers and scientist. Act as a crucial liaison between the VP of Research and the R&D staff to facilitate the efficient execution of projects.

Bidding Initiatives: Engage in strategic efforts to create new or novel opportunities for RMD by traveling to National Laboratories, DOD Bases, DOE, and NIH for bidding purposes. Attend scientific conferences to make presentation on RMD research and to meet with collaborators and agency program managers

Proposal Writing: Craft compelling proposals that effectively communicate project concepts and objectives to secure funding. Collaborate closely with Directors and other R&D staff to develop proposal concepts and assist in the writing and editing of grant applications. Mentor less experienced staff on bidding and proposal writing.

Program Management: Manage various programs to lead them to success with a goal of converting technology into a commercial product.
This position will report directly to the VP of Research and will work closely with the VP of Finance.

Qualifications:
•Proven record of securing funding through non-SBIR sources
•Strong background in radiation detection and instrumentation
•Materials background is a plus
•Excellent oral and written communication skills
•Willingness to travel for bidding purposes
•MS or Ph.D. in relevant fields
