ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, DEBT, Financial Affairs, Debt & Treasury

The Associate Director, Debt is a key member of the Debt &Treasury team at Boston University, and actively assists in the management the University's debt programs, both long-term and short-term, taxable, and tax-exempt. This positions major responsibilities can be categorized into four areas:

  • debt management.
  • financial analysis and reporting.
  • Investment & Commercial bank relationship management.
  • debt compliance and reporting.

Major duties of this position include:

  • Monitors and evaluates the University's debt portfolio, and engages with investment banks, rating agencies, the University's financial advisor, borrowers' counsel, bond counsel, and Mass Development regarding debt issuances and refunding opportunities.
  • Creates debt presentations for Trustee meeting materials and updating financial analysis materials for regularly occurring reports and dashboards.
  • Ensures that the allocation of debt proceeds to individual projects aligns with the established funding plan using analytical and problem-solving techniques and knowledge of financial markets understanding of IRS Private Use Regulations.
  • Manages the day-to-day activities of the University's Debt management, including servicing of debt, monitoring and reporting interest rate risk, validating the swap portfolio mark-to-market valuation, and collateral posting.



Required Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of Finance, Treasury and Cash Management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience blending independent work and collaboration to ensure effective debt management and compliance with institutional objectives.
  • Advanced skills utilizing Excel, including complex formulas in order to acquire, organize, and analyze data. Experience in other data management and reporting tools is a plus.
  • Experienced in analyzing data to determine relevant conclusions and suggest appropriate actions to management.
  • Proven track record to multi-task and prioritize routine tasks and ad-hoc requests in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated intermediate oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented, demonstrating accuracy and quality of work output.
  • Ability to work optimally and collaboratively in a small, collegial team environment.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, intellectually curious.

Preferred Skills:

  • Public accounting or experience within a higher education institution.
  • Experience with ERP/SAP.
