Working independently under the general supervision, executes protocols involving a variety of routine and non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols under Laboratory Director supervision. Will be working with research animals (mice and rats), cell culture, as well as animal tissue and blood specimens. Composes and presents sections of research reports, manuscripts, or grant applications. Performs advanced data analyses using advanced statistical techniques. Coordinates laboratory activities and undertakes quality assurance programs. Will be responsible for orienting and training staff. Will be able to analyze results on her/his own. Technician reports directly to the Laboratory Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, designs and performs research laboratory experiments in the field of cardiovascular endocrinology, including:

a. Animal studies using rodent (rats and mice) colonies, including blood pressure measurements by tail cuff and telemetry.

b. Performs handling of rodents (e.g., mass, food consumption, urine collection).

c. Preparation and maintenance of cell cultures.

d. Preparation and analysis of DNA, RNA, and mRNA.

e. Isolation and analysis of proteins including electrophoresis, transfections, etc.

f. Isolate and collect tissues relevant to the phenotype being studied (e.g., heart, kidneys, conductance/resistance arteries, adrenal glands, etc.).

g. Separate Zona Glomerulosa and Zona Fasciculata cells from the collected adrenals, and perform adrenal cell stimulation experiments.

h. Measure analytes in animal serum/plasma (e.g., hormones, cations, etc.).

Record data, analyze and summarize results. Utilizes computer spreadsheets and graphics to prepare data plots and figures.

Prepares and maintains laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment.

Maintain supplies and inventory, and maintain established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

Assist in the training of new lab members.

Discuss program regularly with Principal Investigator.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal laboratory environments. May have exposure to infectious materials and hazardous substances, exposure to odors, exposure to noise, under controlled conditions. Possible visual strain and hand strain encountered while performing specimen-processing or while using computer terminals. Work requires frequent standing, walking and occasional lifting or carrying supplies.

QUALIFICATIONS

BS in biological/physical science.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Computer skills (intermediate level) including word processing and spreadsheet applications required. Must be extremely organized and capable of working under pressure. Must be proficient in basic laboratory procedures: Westerns, RT-PCR, immunoassays. Be flexible to adjust schedule in accordance with the needs of the department. Ability to identify potential or ongoing problems and help develop solutions to such problems. Must have the ability to work independently. Must possess initiative. Must possess good interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with co-workers, research investigators, other hospital personnel, and external contacts. Must be able to work with animals - rodents. Must show a desire to learn new techniques, disease-related approaches, etc. Experience performing surgeries in animals is a plus.
