Job Description - Research Animal Specialist II, Pathology (3312592) GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides all the animal husbandry, facility maintenance, sanitization, health and welfare monitoring to the gnotobiotic mouse resource. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Water and feed animals within gnotobiotic isolators or containment cages daily according to schedule or as needed, and per requirements for sterile handling. Follows gnotobiotic resource standard operating procedures (SOPs) for mouse husbandry in gnotobiotic isolators and OptiMice containment cages. Assists in transferring gnotobiotic mice from the breeding colony to experimental isolators or to containment cages. Assists in receiving newly arrived conventional animals from vendor sources. Participates in daily care and maintenance of the Animal Facility and of Gnotobiotic work areas. Prepares and handles autoclaving of supply canisters with food, water, bedding, cages, and any additional gnotobiotic isolator supplies under core SOPs and requirements to maintain sterility. Maintains appropriate mouse and project census of cages and mouse numbers in the SmartSheet's application using core laptop or other core handheld devices. Works with Gnotobiotic facility managers and Microbiology personnel to collect samples for sterility testing and assessment of the colonization status of mice that have received defined microbes for studies. Participates in care, maintenance and sanitation of animal areas including around gnotobiotic isolators and areas for the preparation of supplies to be autoclaved. Observes animals daily and reports any abnormal findings or unusual behavior to supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards. QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or Equivalent. 1-2 Years of Previous Animal Care Experience. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Ability to comprehend instructions relating to animal husbandry and care. Basic computer skills proficiency required. Basic communication skills in English, both oral and written. Basic mathematical skills. Ability to work both independently and within a group. BWH is an Affirmative Action Employer.
