Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Experience designing and implementing a complex or experimental system in a research or product development environment. Experience with the intersection of ML and computer systems (either ML for systems or systems for ML). Author/Co-author of well-known and respected papers (e.g., based on impact or citations) in the top venues in the systems field (e.g., SOSP, OSDI, ISCA, MICRO, ASPLOS, EUROSYS, PLDI, SIGCOMM, NSDI, etc.). Ability to provide solid analysis of design alternatives and tradeoffs, often combining aspects from multiple technical fields and subfields. Google Cloud's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google Cloud's needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. You will anticipate our customer needs and be empowered to act like an owner, take action and innovate. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. If you are excited about solving big systems challenges regarding sustainability, energy efficiency, and decarbonization, come join this effort and help shape the future of green computing at Google and in the industry. To meet Google's increasing Large Language Model (LLM) and Cloud demands, we need to identify and implement novel solutions to flatten the lifecycle carbon emission curves for our compute infrastructure, which requires a new suite of analytics, models, tools, systems, and physical structures for exploring and evaluating effective ideas. In this role, you will have the opportunity to blend hardware and software design, modeling, data-driven analysis, and energy/sustainability-driven thinking to impact the system architecture of Google platforms and data centers. Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google’s cutting-edge technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems. Key Responsibilities: Harness data-driven approaches to navigate complex trade-offs in balancing Google's compute needs with emissions reductions and develop novel systems solutions. Formulate metrics and methodology that provide a foundation for optimizing the holistic systems design of Google platforms considering energy and sustainability as well as comparative analysis across the industry. Model and analyze key Google and Cloud workloads to drive server platform architecture design. Guide development of plans to reduce lifecycle carbon and improve energy efficiency by working across data center/hardware/software co-design for Google's compute infrastructure. Collaborate with partner teams up and down the entire stack (e.g., hardware, kernel, networking, CoreML, GCE, Borg) to land impactful results. Develop systems solutions tailored towards Google requirements, advance infrastructure and tools to support identification of emissions tradeoffs at the hardware and system software level. Google is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and is an affirmative action employer. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
