The Arapahoe County Attorney's Office is seeking to fill an Assistant County Attorney II/Senior Assistant County Attorney position. The Arapahoe County Attorney’s Office is a full service in-house public law firm that represents and advises the County and its elected officials, departments, and employees on a wide spectrum of legal matters. This position will be responsible for advising and representing the Board of County Commissioners and Planning Commission on land use matters, and for assisting with other litigation matters and legal issues as needed. The person selected to fill this position will work with a friendly team of local government attorneys with substantial expertise in their fields and have an opportunity to make a positive difference for the residents of the County.
An Assistant County Attorney represents the Board of County Commissioners, other county elected officials, departments, and employees on various litigation and non-litigation matters. This job works under the guidelines and direction of the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney, and is responsible for providing legal advice and representation on matters related to land development, zoning, planning, and other land use matters within the county's jurisdiction.
Assistant County Attorney II Salary Range:
$97,042.14 - $155,015.12 Senior Assistant County Attorney Salary Range:
$117,420.42 - $187,568.42 Please note, these are the salary ranges for 2024. If a hire is not made until 2025, the salary rates may change.
The salary range shown at the header of this posting is the minimum and maximum salary for Assistant County Attorney II and Senior Assistant County Attorney. Most hires have a starting salary between the minimum and midpoint of the grade being hired to. Applicable experience and education will be considered by the County Attorney and HR when making an offer to an applicant.
Responsibilities:
Direct interaction on various legal and non-legal issues with the Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, department directors, departments, and employees. Represents the County and/or its elected officials and employees in legal proceedings in state and federal court, and in administrative proceedings. Attends meetings and executive sessions of the Board of County Commissioners and other meetings as requested. Provides oral and written legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners, its elected officials, department directors, employees, and boards. Responsible for handling cases and issues that are complex, unique, controversial, politically sensitive in nature, and/or require substantial prior experience. Conducts extensive legal research on complex matters in connection with trials and appeals, and in the preparation of briefs and memoranda of law. Independently investigates facts as needed. Drafts and reviews contracts, leases, and other legal instruments and documents on behalf of the County. Drafts policies, regulations, codes, ordinances, and resolutions. Reviews and monitors proposed legislation that has potential impact on the County. Provides assistance to Assistant County Attorneys on legal cases and issues. Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
In-depth knowledge of legal research techniques and ability to effectively and accurately conduct legal research on a wide range of topics. In-depth knowledge of relevant legal principles applicable to local government practice. Ability to use a personal computer for e-mail, calendaring, word processing, and to conduct legal research. Ability to investigate and process factual information effectively, and to apply legal rules to factual situations accurately. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively when faced with a high volume of work and multiple deadlines. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, elected officials, fellow employees, and the general public. Behavioral Competencies:

Juris Doctorate Degree with license to practice law in Colorado. 3+ years of experience in the practice of law for a local government agency that includes land use experience. Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:
Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check. Work Environment:
Work is generally confined to a standard office environment. Physical Demands:
Spends 90% of the time sitting and 10% of the time either standing or walking. Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls, or pushes up to 20 lbs. Occasionally uses cart, dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 20 lbs. Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls, and crouches while performing office or work duties. Verbal and auditory capacity enabling constant interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, and similar; and in public meetings and personal interactions. Constant use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery or equipment. Visual capacity enabling constant use of computer or other work-related equipment. Definitions:
