Surgery Responsibilities: This position is nights from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The position of Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all patient care in the Trauma ICU (TICU), Surgical ICU (SICU), and/or Burn ICU (BICU). Duties include but are not limited to: Assessing health needs and planning and evaluating care of all patients on the general surgery services as well as patients in the surgical intensive care unit. Participating with inpatient sign out at beginning and end of shift. Following up with the General Surgery teams/residents/attending physicians. Involved in trauma resuscitations and performing surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients. Responsible for care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc.) and follow-up. Obtaining consults as needed and discharging patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate. Triage phone calls and review critical labs, follow-up of results with patient and medical staff. Obtaining comprehensive medical histories and performing initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments. Identifying and treating patients and managing treatment of hospitalized patients. Demonstrating an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation. Qualifications: This position is nights from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Required: Practice agreements completed and on file in Department. Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire. HIPAA and other training completion as required by Medical Center Annual TB screening and any applicable test to meet JCAHO requirements. Must possess the skill, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System. Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Current, active, and unrestricted licensed Physician Assistant in the State of California. The PA must have a current DEA number from the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Current BLS certification. Current ACLS and PALS Certification. Within six months of hire, ATLS certification. Experience in Trauma/Critical Care. Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese. Familiarity with UC policies and procedures. A minimum of 1 year of experience in Surgical services.
