Director, Lab Operations

APIIC is seeking an experienced Director, Lab Operations to lead and manage a team of process chemists focused on the chemistry necessary for the development of pharmaceuticals, specifically Key Starting Materials (KSMs) and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). This role is crucial to ensuring the successful optimization of routes or synthesis using Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) for API production.
This role will be responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and other applicable regulations and guidelines, overseeing cleanliness, inventory, and maintenance, and liaising with University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) where the lab is located. This position will work closely with the Vice President of Research & Development and Programs and cross-functional teams to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget, while maintaining high scientific and operational standards. Familiarity with the manufacture and disposition of controlled substances and the associated regulatory landscape is a plus.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Team Leadership: Manage and mentor process chemists in the development of pharmaceutical products, focusing on KSMs and APIs. Process Optimization: Oversee the determination and implementation of optimal routes of synthesis using AMTs. Lab Oversight: Ensure the lab operates in accordance with GLP and other applicable regulations and guidelines, maintaining cleanliness, orderliness, and safety. Inventory & Equipment Management: Oversee lab equipment, inventory management, and procurement to support ongoing research and development. Timeline and Budget Management: Work with Project Managers to ensure that projects are completed within established timelines and budgets, tracking and reporting on progress. Collaboration and Liaison: Serve as the primary laboratory liaison with UMSL, fostering strong communication and partnership. Compliance: Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements, particularly in relation to controlled substances. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Track and report on key KPIs related to project progress, lab efficiency, and personnel development Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred). Bachelor’s with 15+ years of experience, Master’s with 12+ years of experience or a Ph.D. with 10+ years of experience in a pharmaceutical lab environment, with a focus on process chemistry and API development. Strong knowledge of GLP. Familiarity with controlled substances regulations is highly desirable. Proven ability to lead a team and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills. Ability to foster collaboration and maintain strong working relationships with academic partners.
