Haptics Engineer (The Sensory Architect)
Unreal Gigs, San Francisco, California, United States, 94199
Are you passionate about creating realistic, tactile experiences that bring digital interactions to life? Do you have the technical expertise to design haptic feedback systems that add a new layer of immersion to AR, VR, gaming, and wearable technology? If you’re ready to build interfaces that people can feel as well as see,
our client
has the ideal role for you. We’re looking for a
Haptics Engineer
(aka The Sensory Architect) to design, develop, and implement haptic solutions that add rich, engaging feedback to digital interactions. As a Haptics Engineer at
our client , you’ll work with multidisciplinary teams to build systems that combine hardware and software, enabling users to experience realistic feedback through touch. Your expertise in mechanical engineering, signal processing, and embedded systems will be essential in designing haptic feedback that enhances user immersion and interaction across a range of applications. Key Responsibilities: Design and Develop Haptic Feedback Systems: Create haptic devices and mechanisms that deliver tactile feedback to enhance the user experience. You’ll work on everything from vibration motors to more advanced haptic actuators and surface feedback technologies. Implement Control Algorithms and Signal Processing: Develop control algorithms and signal processing techniques that enable accurate, responsive haptic feedback. You’ll ensure signals translate into clear, meaningful sensations for users. Integrate Haptic Solutions with AR/VR and Wearable Devices: Collaborate with AR/VR, gaming, and wearable technology teams to embed haptic feedback into devices. You’ll ensure compatibility with different platforms and achieve seamless integration with graphics and audio. Optimize Performance for Real-Time Interactions: Optimize haptic systems to provide real-time feedback with minimal latency. You’ll adjust parameters to balance performance and battery efficiency, especially in mobile and wearable applications. Conduct User Testing and Sensory Calibration: Perform sensory testing and calibration to ensure feedback feels realistic and intuitive. You’ll gather user feedback to refine sensations, adjusting intensity, frequency, and patterns to match design goals. Collaborate on Multi-Sensory Experience Design: Work closely with UX/UI designers and audio engineers to create multi-sensory experiences that combine haptic feedback with visuals and sound. You’ll help define the role of touch within a broader sensory framework. Stay Updated on Haptics Technology and Innovation: Continuously research new haptic technologies, materials, and methodologies. You’ll incorporate the latest advancements into your work, bringing cutting-edge haptic experiences to users. Required Skills: Proficiency in Haptics and Signal Processing:
Strong knowledge of haptic technology, signal processing, and control systems, including vibration patterns, force feedback, and kinesthetic sensations. Experience with Embedded Systems and Microcontrollers:
Proficiency in microcontroller programming (e.g., ARM, Arduino) to control haptic devices and integrate them with software applications. Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Knowledge:
Familiarity with mechanical and electrical components such as actuators, motors, and sensors used in haptic feedback systems. Programming Skills in C/C++ and MATLAB or Python:
Proficiency in programming languages used for embedded systems, algorithm development, and sensory calibration. Analytical and Problem-Solving Abilities:
Ability to interpret sensory data, optimize control algorithms, and troubleshoot haptic feedback issues to enhance user experience. Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
Equivalent experience in haptics engineering may be considered. Certifications or specialized coursework in haptics, control systems, or sensory technology are advantageous. Experience Requirements: 3+ years of experience in haptics engineering,
with a portfolio demonstrating tactile feedback applications for AR/VR, gaming, or wearable devices. Experience with sensory testing, calibration, and multi-sensory integration in digital applications. Familiarity with tactile design principles and user experience in wearable or handheld devices is beneficial.
