The Medical Technologist (MT) is a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the Medical Clinic, including primary care, gynecology and specialty care. The MT performs a variety of clinical diagnostic tests with emphasis on recognizing and resolving problems and applying interpretive judgement. The MT is responsible for employing practice standards and supporting quality improvement efforts. The MT should have a deep appreciation for the collaborative care model and advancing the divisional priorities

of commitment to quality, communicating a sense of home, and designing with everyone in mind, and cultivating a working relationship with Our Lady of the Lake Health. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 30% - Calibrate and operate equipment and conduct performance checks with appropriate documentation. Establish and monitor quality improvement programs to ensure data accuracy and reliability. Identify and investigate problems with testing, instruments and results, documenting appropriately. Serve as a technical consultant. 25% - Interpret, verify and report test results, utilizing the lab information system and the clinic management system/electronic health record. Consult with the laboratory team if testing and reporting concerns arise. Notify medical providers of critical values according to procedure. Perform inventory management, quality monitoring, data analysis, peer competency and prepare reports for quality assessment. 20% - Perform venipunctures and specimen collection. Follow appropriate safety protocols. Label and prepare specimens for analysis, storage and transport to reference laboratories. Prepare lab requests for specimen collection and processing. Maintain working knowledge of all lab tests and associated fees and inform patients accordingly. Collect immunization forms and assist students with related questions. 20% - Assist with data entry and distribution of laboratory, insurance and billing information, correspondence and medical reports, maintaining strict patient confidentiality and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Complete required trainings as assigned by the university and the Student Health Center. Support quality improvement and accreditation efforts. 5% - Performs other duties as assigned. SPECIAL

Either of the following will qualify:

A baccalaureate degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science plus one year of professional level experience as a medical technologist.

OR

A baccalaureate degree with sixteen semester hours in the biological sciences which includes three semester hours in microbiology, sixteen semester hours in chemistry which includes three semester hours in organic or biochemistry, three semester hours in mathematics; and one year of clinical training in a clinical laboratory, plus one year of professional level experience as a medical technologist.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a current Clinical Laboratory Scientist--Generalist or Specialist license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners as required by law based upon the duties of the position. Function of Work: To perform a wide variety of clinical diagnostic tests with emphasis on recognizing and resolving problems requiring the application of interpretive judgment.

Level of Work: Experienced.

Supervision Received: General from laboratory personnel of a higher level.

Supervision Exercised: May supervise laboratory support personnel.

Location of Work: This job is restricted to laboratories which are licensed, regulated and inspected for compliance with various federal and state rules and regulations and which fall under the jurisdiction of state licensure, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Job Distinctions: Differs from Medical Laboratory Technologist 1 by the absence of close of supervision.

Differs from Medical Laboratory Technologist 3 by lack of advanced or assistant supervisory duties.Performs tests in the field of bacteriology which involve isolating, identifying, typing ,and grouping bacteria and fungi present in body fluids, exudates, transudates, skin scrapings, autopsy and surgical specimens, or other materials. May perform testing to determine the efficiency of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals against various disease causing organisms.

Performs chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other materials related to clinical medicine or research in the medical sciences, such as; chemical analyses of blood, urine, and spinal fluid.

Performs various hematological tests and examinations such as red blood cell counts, differential white blood cell counts, platelet counts, reticulocyte counts, sickle cell tests, studies of red blood cell morphology, hemoglobin estimations, fragility tests, sedimentation rate, coagulation time, bleeding time, clot retraction time, and indices.

Prepares and examines feces and other materials for the identification of parasites and ova.

Performs agglutination, flocculation, complement fixation, fluorescent antibody, and other serological tests for the detection of disease states.
