Job Responsibilities
Careers at DPH: Work that makes a difference! Embracing Service, Inspiring Innovation, Promoting Teamwork, Pursuing Excellence, and Advancing Equity Under the direct supervision of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program Manager the Breastfeeding Coordinator will assist to d
evelop, administer, monitor, and evaluate the yearly breastfeeding plans for WIC sites within the Midlands Public Health Region.
Planning and Coordination:
- Coordinate and development a plan with the breastfeeding staff and WIC/Nutrition Program Manager; disseminate and implement breastfeeding policies and procedures in all local WIC clinics; work with the sites to assist with the coordination of referrals by risk condition and appropriate provider.
-Act as a resource person for the WIC breastfeeding program, physicians' offices, healthcare providers and businesses; provide consultation, technical assistance, and training to physicians' offices, healthcare providers, and community organizations on breastfeeding support.
-Coordinate with other program areas and assure integration of the breastfeeding program goals into program services; provide breastfeeding outreach by participating in coalitions, media events, and other community outreach events.
-Routinely evaluate WIC breastfeeding program activities within sites, and coordinate with the WIC Nutrition Program Manager, to evaluate results of reviews and takes necessary action.
-Assist in monitoring all WIC breastfeeding expenditures to assure compliance with Federal regulations and USDA policy.
Management and Training:
-Recruit and rehire staff to become peer counselors in assigned health departments.
-Assure appropriate orientation and trainings are provided to new and existing peer counselors.
-Review and approve all working time for staff through the South Carolina Enterprise Information System (SCEIS).
-Attend quarterly Breastfeeding Coordinator meetings and attend annual Peer Counselor Update as required by the WIC Central unit of the agency.
Emergency Preparedness:
In accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DPH employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster. Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements:
Some positions require registration or eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association. A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor's degree in any field and registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting. Some positions require registration with the American Dietetics Association and a valid license from the South Carolina Panel for Dietetics.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Managerial experience of two to three (2-3) years; experience and expertise may substitute for the managerial experience.
Experienced Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and International Board of Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification;
Preferred Qualifications
- Holds current certification with the CLC certificate issued by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice, Inc; maintain CLC credential and breastfeeding knowledge and skills through continuing education and CLC recertification.
- Holds current certification with the IBCLC credential issued by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners; maintains IBCLC credential, and breastfeeding knowledge and skills through continuing education and IBCLC recertification.
