Job Summary/Basic Function

The Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences welcomes applications for a 12-month full-time salaried position for a Laboratory Technician II to provide support to the department faculty. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, incubators, spectrophotometers, light microscopes, and biosafety cabinets. Support faculty with the coordination and preparation of lab courses. Set up basic laboratory equipment and solutions for classroom use, including moving equipment to the required classroom, setup, calibration, and stock reagent preparation. Provide laboratory housekeeping including glassware cleaning, sample preservation and preparation, reagent water availability, sterilizer and fume hood maintenance scheduling, and inspection of eyewash and safety shower stations. Operate and maintain shared departmental equipment such as autoclaves, HPLC, GC-MS, TGA, benchtop NMR, XRF, and AA. Obtain quotes from vendors, submit requisitions, and approve invoices for supplies needed for teaching labs while tracking budgets. Manage service contracts with different vendors and coordinate chemical and biological waste disposal. Troubleshoot and repair departmental computer hardware and software, interfacing with Information Technology as needed. Monitor and schedule usage of computer labs in the department. Maintain data records of equipment use and comply with chemical and biohazard safety standards. Maintain chemical inventory database and safety data sheets (SDSs) for hazardous materials. Carry out studies and responsibilities with limited supervision, making decisions and establishing work priorities on essential operations. Other related duties may be assigned by the Department Chair as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of biological and chemical hygiene, including safety precautions for handling hazardous materials. Knowledge of hazardous waste management. Ability to prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory procedures. Ability to manage vendor accounts. Ability to promote a culture of safety within the department and throughout campus. Good oral and written communication skills. Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. or commensurate laboratory and equipment experience, with 1-3 years of prior experience in operating and maintaining advanced instrumentation such as benchtop NMR, GC-MS, TGA, HPLC, XRF, and AA. M.S. in chemistry preferred. Posting Information
