Principle Compliance Veterinarian
to join their team. Under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian (AV), the Principle Compliance Veterinarian will provide veterinary oversight and support for the animal care and use program at the University of Washington. Specifically, the Principle Compliance Veterinarian will have delegated responsibility for oversight of animals that are not regulated by the USDA. In addition, the Principle Compliance Veterinarian will assist in the training of individuals working with all research animals as part of the Center for Laboratory Animal Training Resources (CLATR) and will help to develop and refine training methods and resources as appropriate for job duties. This position will support excellent animal care and welfare within the context of the University's highly successful biomedical research program. The Principle Compliance Veterinarian will report directly to the Attending Veterinarian, keeping them updated on findings and trends in morbidity and mortality and play a critical role in helping ensure the program meets regulatory requirements and standards of veterinary care for all vertebrate animals and cephalopods that are used in research, teaching and testing at the UW. IACUC functions (25%): Provide advice, consultation, and support to researchers and the IACUC on the proper use of animals in research. Assist in development and evaluation of progressive animal care and research techniques to improve animal care and use over time. Assist with the evaluation and review of animal use protocols and amendments, providing guidance and support to IACUC, principal investigators, and university biosafety personnel. Provide prompt responses to amendments which may qualify for Veterinary Verification and Consultation review. Assist in assuring facility and researcher compliance with PHS/OLAW guidelines, AAALAC-International accreditation requirements, and animal welfare regulations. Participate in site visits/consultations by external oversight organizations (USDA, and industry partners), as necessary. Attend IACUC meetings to provide information, as needed. Compliance Oversight (25%): Assist with oversight of the program non-USDA-regulated laboratory animals, including mice, rats, fish, cephalopods, and other species as directed by the AV. Regular consultation and knowledge exchange with researchers and their staff regarding animal procedures and protocol compliance. Provide input to research animal enrichment programs. Assist with and evaluate new techniques for veterinary care to improve animal care and welfare over time. Notify the Attending Veterinarian of program concerns, potential non-compliance, or animal welfare concerns that arise. Training (25%): Participate in development and sustainment of computer-based and face-to-face animal use training programs for laboratory animal facility staff, principal investigators, research staff, and IACUC members. Perform, give advice, and provide necessary surgical technique and anesthesia training requested by principal investigators. Participate in writing, reviewing, and updating veterinary and compliance policies, guidelines, and SOPs as required. Institution-wide (25%): Serve on appropriate university committees related to research activities and the animal program. Attend appropriate national conferences/meetings to develop and leverage collegial relationships to import and improve the UW animal care and research program. Participate in post-approval monitoring across campus. Develop and maintain a program for facility biologic monitoring. Engage in institutional plans involving renovation or construction of facilities in which animals are housed or used, including design and maintenance of animal facilities. Minimum Qualifications: Professional Degree: DVM Professional Certification- Veterinary License in United States, preferably State of Washington Must have a minimum of 4-5 years experience. Position requires: Experience working in a large animal care and use program with authority and understanding of how the various constituents must work together to move research forward while maintaining regulatory compliance. Completion of a training program in a laboratory animal veterinary residence program or equivalent experience. Experience and knowledge of federally mandated Animal Care and Use Program issues, including laws and regulations and federally required IACUC review operating procedures. Ability to assist development and evaluation of progressive advances in animal care and research. Ability to uphold a highly responsive program presence in a fast-paced, multiple priority environment. Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making across scope of responsibility. Ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities and projects under deadline pressure and changing priorities. Ability to effectively function independently, as part of a team, and in collaboration with diverse audiences. Ability to maintain confidentiality related to program information. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills. Demonstrated proficiency and work experience with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable with new technology. A commitment to communication, customer service, organization and ongoing process improvement.
