The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 166 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.
The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure, and recreation of its citizens.
Job Summary
This position is designed for veterinary or veterinary technician students. Working under the guidance of Willowbrook's veterinary team, students will contribute to providing professional medical care to sick, orphaned, and injured wildlife while receiving on the job training to complement their education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide routine and emergency care to a diverse range of wildlife, including avians, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Assist in medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures to support the overall health and well-being of wildlife. Collaborate in euthanasia and postmortem examinations when required. Maintain accurate medical and procedural records. Safely handle and restrain wildlife. Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the District's safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents. Maintain a supportive working environment. Perform other duties as required. Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire. Current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) of degree in an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program OR current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) in an accredited Veterinary Technician Program (CVT, RVT, LVT), and must be in good standing in current program. Must have current rabies vaccination. Experience in observing, safely handling, restraining, and transporting birds, mammals, and reptiles preferred. Experience with exotic or wildlife medicine preferred. Basic familiarity with wildlife rehabilitation philosophy. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Schedule:
Position does not start until May 12, 2025, and ends August 15, 2025. Four 10-hour days per week with one weekend day expected. Times and days may vary occasionally.
Pay:
$15-$16 an hour.
Uniform:
Scrub tops provided for the duration of the position, responsible for scrub bottoms/workwear pants and sturdy work shoes (preferably hiking boots or something similar).
