Chief Financial Officer

Summary of position:

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is the leader responsible for the business and financial control of operations of Walker and supporting programs. The CFO will collaborate with the Leadership Team responsible to provide support and consultation services to all Walker programs and subsidiaries. The CFO will promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Control and maintain all financial transactions, accounting records and all other financial matters relating to Walker with a staff of three full-time employees. Maintain records in accordance with GAAP and various Commonwealth and other regulatory requirements. Responsible for all state and federal compliance, including the preparation of the Massachusetts Commonwealth Uniform Financial Statements and Independent Auditors Report (UFR).
  2. Oversee financial risk management, accounting policies and procedures, and system of internal controls.
  3. Review and oversee the financial accounting of all contracts entered into by Walker; prepare submissions of contracts and amendments; participate as appropriate in contract negotiations with funding sources with the CHRO and/or COO.
  4. Provide leadership and consultation to all phases of institutional planning and program development at Walker in conjunction with the President & CEO and the Leadership Team.
  5. Oversee the integration and ongoing performance of computerized financial systems, accounts payable, cash receipts, cash disbursements, inventory management, cost allocation between programs, purchasing, general ledger production and presentation of accurate financial statements, financial analysis and projections (including financial and cash flow) in accordance with GAAP.
  6. Provide accurate accounting records for unrestricted and restricted donations, pledges, bequests, etc.; and support the preparation and submission of grant proposals in conjunction with the Vice President of Advancement.
  7. Oversee all transactions between Board funds, operations funds, restricted funds, capital funds and bank funds of Walker.
  8. Oversee preparation of Walker's annual budget; provide consultation and support to program management staff with budgetary responsibilities.
  9. Prepare monthly budget tracking and financial monitoring reports to Board and management.
  10. Work with Leadership Team to oversee preparation of an annual capital budget; staff the Capital Planning Committee of the Board.
  11. Serve as staff chair of the Walker Board Finance Committee, including the Audit and Investment Management subcommittees; facilitate meeting times, agenda and necessary information flow to Board members.
  12. Oversee the Director of Billing and Contracts and ensure accurate and timely billing in accordance with the monthly closing schedule.
  13. Provide leadership in agency-wide strategic planning.
  14. Oversee the Facilities department and ensure facilities are proactively managing the preventative, routine, and deferred maintenance of Walker locations. Work with the Director of Facilities to develop short-term and long-range plans for capital improvements.
  15. All other duties as assigned.

Education and Licensure:

  1. Bachelors Degree in accounting, financial management or business administration is required. CPA and/or MBA preferred.

Skills & Qualifications:

  1. Minimum 10 years supervisory experience in progressively responsible senior financial administration, preferably for a nonprofit Social Services organization or school system.
  2. Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience completing the Massachusetts Commonwealth Uniform Financial Statements and Independent Auditors Report (UFR).
  3. Knowledge of accounting, administration, and compliance for publicly funded nonprofit organizations, including A-133 audits, and other state and federal reporting.
  4. Proficiency with financial and accounting systems.
  5. Understanding of medical billing and state funding UFR/MSR.
  6. Exceptional interpersonal, networking, communication skills with a proven track record of maintaining positive working relationships within and outside the organization.

Requirements:

  1. Ability to meet deadlines and follow through with multiple projects simultaneously.
  2. Ability to respond to and follow through with requests professionally.
  3. Must be able to sit at work station for prolonged periods of time, consistent with OSHA suggestions and requirements.
  4. Must have ability to access different building locations and mailboxes.
  5. Must have ability to travel to all Walker locations.
  6. Must have ability to lift packages up to 10 pounds.
