Portfolio Success Manager, Amazon Catalytic Capital

Amazon seeks a customer-obsessed leader to own and nurture our relationships with the funds and portfolio companies of Amazon Catalytic Capital (ACC). The individual will create opportunities for strategic collaborations (e.g., partnerships, direct investments) between Amazon and with funds and startups. This candidate will develop metrics to measure success, monitor the investments based on those metrics, and build visibility with senior stakeholders across Amazon.


Day-to-day, this individual will identify and lead complex, first-of-a-kind commercial negotiations that have broad implications to multiple Amazon business units and require a strong centralized advocate. This individual will be expected to proactively engage and lead diverse teams across multiple Amazon business units, geographies, scientific domains (AI, cleantech, fintech, future of work, enterprise, etc.), and timelines. Successful candidates enjoy diving deep into complex problems, work effectively with cross-functional teams, and thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of Amazon’s peculiar ways of working, be familiar with the practice of venture capital, and be proven startup founders and corporate operators.


This position will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, or Seattle, Washington, and will report into a Director of Corporate Development.


Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Execute and lead our strategy to support our funds and their portfolio companies and underrepresented founders, including:
    1. Provide value-added services that utilize Amazon’s strengths.
    2. Create connectivity between funds, selected portfolio companies, and Amazon through programmatic activities that span Amazon investment funds and business units.
    3. Develop and operate portfolio monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
    4. Continuously raise the bar on programs, processes, and best practices.
  1. Serve as the primary point of contact between ACC portfolio companies and Amazon, including our BUs (AWS, Ops, WFM, etc.), PR, Public Policy, Sustainability, Legal, Finance, Tax, and other key partner teams to increase visibility and drive adoption of portfolio company technologies inside Amazon.
  1. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to be part of investment decisions for funds as well as portfolio companies.

About the Team

Amazon Catalytic Capital aims to provide more startups led by underrepresented founders access to capital, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities to help bring their ideas to fruition. This dedicated investment program - with an initial $150 million in funding - will invest in venture capital (VC) funds, accelerators, incubators, and venture studios that have a track record of and commitment to investing in startups with underrepresented founders. We bring Amazon's resources - funding, mentorship, potential partnerships and product collaboration, and insights - to help these startups scale.


About the Corporate Development Team
Corporate Development is a small, collaborative team who values authentic individuals that think creatively and will proactively seek out opportunities to advance the growth initiatives of Amazon’s businesses through inorganic efforts, including mergers, acquisitions, investments, and partnerships.


Minimum Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in business development or corporate development.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively while applying sound business judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to quickly gain the respect of peers, internal leaders, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in startup leadership (e.g., startup founder/CxO) or engagement roles is a plus.
  • Experience working on diversity, equity, and inclusion strategic initiatives; and/or experience working on collaborations and partnerships with historically underrepresented communities.
  • Able to build and maintain a network of senior-level relationships to facilitate deal flow.
  • Able to operate effectively in an ambiguous environment.
  • Highly collaborative and able to influence without authority.
  • End-to-end experience identifying, negotiating, and closing complex, first-of-a-kind transactions.
