The Manager, Network Engineering, Wireless will lead and manage a team of wireless engineers dedicated to the design, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of the university's wireless network infrastructure. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring high-performance and secure wireless connectivity across the campus. The Manager will develop and implement strategies for wireless network improvements, work in close collaboration with the Director of Network Services to ensure alignment with university-wide networking strategies, and ensure compliance with industry best practices, ITS, and university policies, processes, and procedures. Additionally, this role will oversee the resolution of complex technical issues, provide mentorship and training to the team, and facilitate collaboration with other ITS teams and stakeholders. This individual will leverage their understanding of wireless technologies, excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills to lead this team.

The Manager, Network Engineering, Wireless will positively impact UCSF’s operations and culture by ensuring UCSF’s IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university’s academic, medical, and research mission. This team member will advance the University’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCSF’s vision while modeling UCSF’s culture and values.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $113,500 - $258,100 (Annual Rate).

The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the UCSF’s network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • 5 to 7+ years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology or network operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership/management skills, including abilities in persuasion, negotiation, change management, and mentorship. Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing inclusive leadership to others, cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Significant experience in designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale, complex network environments. Advanced understanding of professional communications and network systems. (i.e. Cisco, Aruba wireless services)
  • Advanced technical skills in wireless network design, configuration, and troubleshooting, including comprehensive knowledge of wireless technologies including 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, RF, antennas, controllers, and wireless security protocols.
  • Significant understanding of security best practices for wireless networks, including encryption, authentication, and compliance with regulations.
  • Proficiency in using wireless analysis tools (such as AirMagnet, Ekahau) and troubleshooting tools for diagnosing and resolving wireless network issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure swift resolution of issues, as well as thorough knowledge and experience working with network management systems.
  • The ability to manage network projects efficiently, including resource allocation, budgeting, and scheduling. Ability to gather, organize, and prioritize work assignments, even with limited guidance.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. Ability to assign work to medium-sized teams and demonstrated experience presenting complex technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience in delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities. Significant experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
  • Extensive experience in solving technical and non-technical problems; the ability to delegate problem-solving when appropriate to the proper resources. Ability to lead data gathering efforts, seeking information from multiple and diverse sources. Experience operating as a point of escalation is needed. Demonstrated understanding of how decisions affect teams and the ability to make decisions with integrity.
  • The ability to inspire creativity in others and advise teams on industry-leading practices, such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Demonstrated experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 to 5+ years of experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic, medical, and research and administrative functions of a large public university.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional certification (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications, equivalent Aruba certifications such as ACMP/ACSP will also be considered.
  • Aruba Certifications, or Cisco Meraki certifications (CMSS) will also be considered.
  • ITIL, Project management certification (e.g., PMP).
