Purpose:
The Senior Controller will report directly to and work closely with the CFO. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to be an integral part of a fast-paced, entrepreneurial work environment interacting with clients, external counsel, consultants, tax team, asset management team, property management team, and investments team. This individual will be involved in all accounting activities, including but not limited to, vendor payments, tenant collections, monthly/quarterly reporting, CAM reconciliations, bank reconciliations, and working alongside a third-party CPA firm for the issuance of annual financial statements. The Senior Controller will specifically be responsible for the management, leadership and training of the property accounting sub-team within the accounting department.

Role + Responsibilities:
Leadership:

  1. Collaborate closely with the CFO in developing and executing financial strategies aligned with organizational goals and objectives
  2. Lead, inspire and develop staff by building engagement with the property accounting team, providing feedback and growth opportunities and holding team accountable. Provide mentoring and coaching for direct reports
  3. Provide direction, delegate and remove obstacles to manage team performance.
  4. Plan and prioritize work (your own and your direct reports’) to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals
  5. Secure and deploy resources effectively and efficiently
  6. Address performance issues or concerns timely, ensure appropriate documentation is maintained and evaluate issues where appropriate
  7. Responsible for the development and maintenance of accounting policies and the appropriate application of those policies to the Company’s business activities
  8. Collaborate with the Asset Management, Property Management, and Investment teams to develop and manage the annual budgeting process
Technical:
  1. Know the most effective and efficient processes to get things done, with a focus on continuous improvement
  2. Oversee the financial close process and all associated processes and monthly/quarterly reporting to ensure delivery of accurate and timely results to stakeholders
  3. Oversee proper accounting treatment of complex transactions, including the accounting for joint ventures
  4. Manage year-end financial statement (reviews/audits) process and own relationships and communication with external CPA provider
  5. Assist in preparation of property acquisition, disposition, and financing closing statements
  6. Approve daily cash receipts and vendor payments
  7. Approve monthly mortgage payments and interest rate SWAPs
  8. Perform detailed review of annual income and expense forms for real estate tax filings
  9. Perform detailed review of distributions/contributions calculations
  10. Perform detailed review of construction draw schedules for active development projects
  11. Perform detailed review of property cash reforecasts
  12. Execute to a high standard – acts with a sense of urgency, with the end result in mind and can follow through to deliver exceptional results
  13. Monitor accounts receivable for collection issues
  14. Ensure vendors are paid timely and accurately
  15. Ensure tenant billbacks are billed timely and collected
  16. Review annual/fiscal year CAM calculations
  17. Support lender reporting
  18. Review waterfall calculations, as needed
  19. All other projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance required
  2. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, preferred
  3. 15+ years of progressive accounting experience; commercial real estate industry highly preferred
  4. At least 10 years of managerial experience in managing a team of property accountants and assistant controllers
  5. Proficiency in Yardi software
  6. Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office suite
  7. Great team building skills
  8. Detail oriented with problem-solving mindset, superior work ethic and sound judgment
  9. Demonstrate excellent organizational, leadership, relationship management and time management skills
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience communicating with executives, stakeholders, clients, tenants, and vendors preferred
  11. Ability to interact in a team-oriented environment, show a willingness to collaborate and multitask, with a balanced demeanor of professionalism and a proactive attitude
  12. Adaptability to changing demands and meeting deadlines
  13. Making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward
  14. Effective problem-solving skills
