Pay Range
$294,780 - $380,424 Annually

Job Description
We have an opening for a Director/Division Leader to lead a staff of 160 research scientists to meet the goals and objectives of its customers and stakeholders. You will provide management oversight and technical leadership for the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division, specifically in the areas of high-performance computing, mathematics, computer and data science, and scientific computing, and you will help oversee the CASC Academic Engagement Program. This position requires interactions with LLNL programs, Laboratory managers, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, University of California, other academic institutions, and industry. The CASC Director/Division Leader is a member of the Computing Directorate senior management team.
In this role you will
Provide leadership and technical direction to effectively manage the division’s scientific staff including management and project leads. Maintain and build CASC's world-class technical expertise in scientific computing and research. Oversee outreach activities to enhance collaborations and promote the division’s world-class capabilities. Develop and maintain relationships with current and potential programmatic customers, sponsors, industrial and academic partners, and other stakeholders; lead the development of new opportunities that involve CASC researchers. Establish partnerships with other research organizations at LLNL to enable collaborative work on critical emerging technologies Responsible for comprehensive performance management, recruiting and retention, career development and evaluation of the staff. Work with Computing’s senior management team to establish a long-term plan for and provide oversight of the research and development activities to ensure the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of underlying core competencies. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ability and intent to obtain a DOE Q clearance (requires U.S. citizenship and a federal background investigation). Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer or data science, computational science, or related field or the equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge. Extensive experience managing and leading a technical organization, including knowledge of strategic planning, organizational dynamics, workforce management processes, fiscal management, and project/program management Expert level skills in negotiation, facilitation, collaboration, and problem-solving necessary to lead and to influence leadership and interact effectively with all levels of management and staff, both internal and external. Proven record of scientific creativity, achievement and leadership, as documented in publications and professional recognition in the computational science field. Expert written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and accurately convey technical content and value propositions to both expert and non-expert audiences. Significant supervisory experience, including experience in development and implementation of performance reviews, ranking, and salary management; lead, motivate, and build complex interdisciplinary teams to work programmatic and institutional goals.
Qualifications We Desire
In-depth knowledge and understanding of Laboratory programs. Experience with LLNL or NNSA/DOE programs and the role of discipline support organizations. Active DOE Q clearance (or active Top Secret Clearance). Ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
